I'm Becky Reid, and I will be your instructor in Career Planning, Comprehensive. Have a look at my video to learn a little bit about me. Then, explore the rest of this page and the other pages on this site: About PEDS 110, Grading, and Support (in the navigation menu).
The best way to reach me before the class begins or before you register is to send me an email: rebecca_reid@cuesta.edu
Once you are enrolled and you are able to access the course, you can use the Canvas inbox to contact me (look for the InBox icon in the global navigation bar when you are logged in to Canvas). You are also welcome to drop by my Virtual Support hours on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 pm. If that doesn't work for you, we can set up a one-on-one Zoom meeting. Make an appointment here.
I'll respond to messages within 24 hours Monday through Friday, or on Monday if you contact me on the weekend. (BTW, my weekend usually begins Friday afternoon.)
Becky Reid
PEDS 110 Professor
My intro. video. I ramble a bit.
Virtual student support hours (a.k.a. "office hours") will be on Wednesdays, 3:00-4:00.
I will be in my office, in front of my computer with a Zoom window open, ready to answer questions or just chat about anything on your mind.
It's stressful it is to be a college student, especially right now. COVID-19 added significant stress to our lives, and many are still recovering from the disruptions of the pandemic. Racial injustices in our country add even more stress to the lives of people of color, immigrants and their families, and members of other minoritized groups. I know that these stressors may affect your ability to process information and manage your learning. Do your best, but remember to be gentle with yourself.
Like you, I'm on a continuing journey of learning and growth. I'm committed to improving my teaching every semester, and I my students are an important source of my growth. As a White, neurotypical, female college professor, I know I'm not able to understand all the experiences of my students.
That said, I want you to know I am committed to creating a positive learning environment where all students feel safe and treated with respect and dignity. I welcome your feedback at any time. Your input empowers me to be a better teacher.
I will provide you with a well organized course and clear assignment expectations
I will be actively present in your learning
I will provide a safe and supportive environment for you to share thoughts and ideas with your peers
I will communicate with you regularly though course announcements, assignment feedback, course discussion boards, and individual messages.
I will let you know whenever I use any A.I. tool to create or grade an assignment.
I will reach out to you when I sense you need support.
You will strive to be an active participant in this course and strive to meet due dates.
You will maintain an open line of communication with me so I understand how to support you.
You will contact me if you have a concern about meeting an upcoming due date.
You will treat your peers with dignity and respect.
You will only use A.I. tools on designated assignments (see below)
You will be gentle on yourself, and not let "perfection" (how ever you define it) become the enemy of a well-rounded, satisfying life.
Cuesta College is asking it's professors to choose a specific policy about the use of generative A.I. (GenAI) for assignments. I've chosen the one called "conditional". The full text of the policy is to the right (or below), but here's my explanation in plainer English:
Most of the assignments in this class will ask you to think about what you want: what kind of lifestyle, what kind of career, where you'd like to live, what you find interesting, and so on. It seems obvious to me that only YOU can answer those types of questions. So, using GenA.I. as a tool to complete most assignments in this class just doesn't make sense and isn't allowed.
GenAI might be a useful tool for some assignments in this class, like when I ask you to research specific careers, or schools, or courses of study. In that case, I'll tell you upfront, in the assignment directions, when using GenAI is an option. If you choose to use it, you'll have to explain what tool you used and how you fact-checked the answers you were given.
Unless an assignment specifically states you can use GenAI to complete an assignment, you can't use it.
If you use GenAI for an assignment where its not allowed, or if you use it in an approved assignment without explaining what AI tool you used and how you used it, I will assign a placeholder grade of zero. You can choose to meet with me to discuss the assignment, you may take back the assignment submission and resubmit.
Having an A.I. policy is new for me. Please sent me a message at rebecca_reid@cuesta.edu or via the course inbox, if you have any questions or comments about this policy.
The use of generative AI is conditionally authorized for use to complete some assignments as noted in this course. Only certain assignments in this course will allow the use of generative AI (GenAI) tools, as designated by the instructor. Any such use must be appropriately acknowledged and cited. For all other assignments, GenAI use is not permitted.
Any such use must be appropriately acknowledged and cited. Plagiarism is unethically paraphrasing and/or presenting someone else’s words, writing, images, or ideas as if they are one's own without citing and/or quoting the original source material, and this includes work produced with the use of generative A.I. (GenAI) tools.
Please note that large language model GenAI tools frequently provide users with incorrect information, tend to make up or “hallucinate” incorrect facts and fake citations, generate contradictory statements, incorporate copyrighted material without appropriate attribution, perpetuate implicit biases, and sometimes integrate or report offensive concepts, products, or images. Students will be responsible for any inaccurate, biased, offensive, or otherwise unethical content they submit regardless of whether it originally comes from them or GenAI. It is each student’s responsibility to assess the validity and applicability of any GenAI output that is submitted. Use of GenAI tools to produce work without authorization and/or appropriate acknowledgment or citation will be considered academic misconduct. Different classes at Cuesta College may implement different A.I. usage policies, and it is the student’s responsibility to be informed of and conform to the expectations for each course.
