The Pandemic Educational Development Research Collaborative

Our Research Goals

As educational developers, we work inside and outside centers for teaching and learning at colleges and universities across the United States to enhance teaching and learning in higher education by bringing evidence-based practices and equity-minded strategies to work with key stakeholders - faculty, students, and administrators - to make and sustain change in courses, curricula, departments, and the institution. The concerns and values of our profession are deeply intertwined with our institutions efforts to succeed in their educational missions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our research collaborative focuses on documenting and reflecting on the work of educational developers during the pandemic. As a team of researcher-participants, we have been following a unique protocol that involves routine personal logs, paired coding conversations, and analytical memos to gather observations and reflections from educational developers across 18 different four-year institutions. Our goal is to provide practical insights for our colleagues and stakeholders as we navigate the various phases of the pandemic and beyond it.

Our Research Questions

  1. What characterizes the work of centers and educational developers as our institutions respond to different stages of the pandemic?

  2. How do centers measure their success in supporting instructors and/or students in the current context?

  3. How do educational developers psychologically and emotionally manage as we do this work?

  4. What does this look like at different kinds of centers? How do centers work in collaboration with other offices and academic leaders?

  5. What factors improve or hamper our organizational responses?
