Life is a gift that keeps on giving but its paradoxes and intricacies can time and again drive us insane and over the edge. I stumbled upon the best thread on Twitter this past week and I learned a few things I'd like to share with you among my own pearls of wisdom.
Here's a key chain containing tools and ideas that will surely unlock the doors of beauty, hope, gratitude, and self-compassion in your life:
It's okay to play that song you love on repeat all day!
Music is already so therapeutic and now, just imagine if you played your same favorite two songs from sunrise to sunset? Sang aloud to your favorite tune all day? It doesn't matter! It makes your day a little better and makes your inner self smile. Do it. Do it for your soul, do it for you!
Surround yourself with beauty!
I buy things that beautify my life. Even if I'm having a bad day, I can boil water in a beautiful kettle, make coffee in a gorgeous cup, stir it with a cute teaspoon, and sit on a lovely couch, in a living room that smells divine. "What a tragic day, but look at this teaspoon!" - said one user. I've never seen this feeling articulated so accurately! I CAN RELATE.
Be kind to yourself!
I saw something the other day that said, "If you're feeling at 40% on a specific day, but give it your all, you gave your 100%. That has helped me shift my mindset drastically and give myself more empathy about what I have/have not accomplished in a day.
S-P-L-U-R-G-E-! (Or not)
And I quote, "This one is controversial but I have a credit card with a huge limit. I hardly use it but I love having it. I love having access to money. It helps me dream of new possibilities. Sure I'm not buying things but I could. I want for less because things are in my grasp." What an interesting gem!
Parent some plants!
My sister has always surrounded herself with plants and I couldn't figure out why for the longest (honestly, I still haven't). Upon visiting her while on a sabbatical recently, when stressed out, I'd observe the plants and they'd make me feel alive. I'd research and study the intricacies and differences in their leaves for hours for absolutely no reason except that it was calming to put my life aside and observe other life forms for a bit.
Hobbies are important!
One user said, "I cook, garden and paint. Before they were just hobbies but now I call them 'talents'. I take time to marvel at what I did, take photos to remember it, and imagine being famous at it."
Structure your life!
I create a schedule of things to look forward to like events, movies, weekly series/podcasts, get-togethers, etc. I can control most things, I budget for them early enough, and most importantly, I am always moving and I always have something to do.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness!
Keep your surroundings clean. That way you don't have to deal with both mental clutter and physical clutter. It's mood-enhancing. Whenever you feel mentally cluttered, clean and pretend that's you decluttering the mess of stress in your mind. Works wonders!
Get a fur baby!
Petting an animal alone increases oxytocin by great numbers, let alone cuddling one and taking care of one. It makes you feel important and teaches you responsibility. Just the sight of my dog has saved me a lot. Instead of tears of sadness, I often find myself crying cause he's so cute and he notices energy shifts effortlessly! Unconditional love.
Make a vision/mood board!
Put together some pics that represent stuff that you wanna achieve long-term or stuff that you just like looking at. This can be a digital board or a physical one. It reminds you where you're going and it's just fun to look at! Here's mine:
Humor your inner child!
Buy yourself stuff you always wanted as a kid. Buy superhero posters and action figures and display them in your room, invest in a PlayStation or any game console, buy cute roller skates and try them out, wear bright colors, go do something you swore you'd do when you become an adult!
Make a gratitude jar!
Every time something great happens, write it on a post-it note, fold it up, and put it in a glass jar. At the end of the year, take the notes out one by one and look back at what God has done for you. Counting your blessings brings instant gratification.
Work out or do yoga!
I don't think I need to explain how life-changing it is to be active. It boosts your mood up so quickly and pulls you out of depressive episodes magically! It's a win-win situation cause your mind benefits and so does your body.
Start a blog!
This is in my top 3 ways to stay happy! Use it to document your life like journaling. Blogging keeps my writing talent alive and it helps me learn new things when I research for my articles. It's so healing and gives me an additional purpose.
