PDXDerbyDudes is not directly associated with any specific organization. We support Pinewood Derby racing and promote youth building for everyone. PDXDerbyDudes has been racing Pinewood derby races in the Portland Metro area since 2003.
Derby Dudes has been given a wonderful opportunity to share our all-aluminum Pinewood Derby race track with you. We enjoy racing and want to help you run the best race your group has ever had. Our track is a modern racer's dream, it has:
All aluminum construction (Extrusion)
6 lanes for maximum race experience for people against one another
Computerized Start and Stop Timing to .001 of a second to ensure whose car wins.
Randomizing software that puts your car at random vs other cars in the race.
Each car will run once in every lane an accumulated time total will determine your car's overall performance.
A team of experts to run the racetrack portion of your event
Example of how a Pack does their pinewood derby.
Sample (Unofficial) Rules are in a file below called pinewood.docx this is provided as an example.
Fill out this Excel sheet with all your car information (We suggest you include every possible racer, it is easier for us to remove than add people later) Excel forms are available at the bottom of this page. Add all scouts and open/outlaw class cars you want to race on the one sheet. Do Not Modify the Sheet format.
Schedule a day with our staff for when we are available to help run the race.
Weight in all cars for correct weights before race time. We request 24 hours or more before race day. Leadership should hold all cars for Race Day.
Examine cars to meet your organization's rules and verify with the PDXDerbyDudes Rules. (cars that are too narrow or too wide will interfere with other cars or not fit the track. The height of the car's body is another issue be sure there is no less than the rules state.
Open classes or unlimited cars (Parents, non-group participants) are welcome and must still work within PDXDerbyDudes Rules.
Have a designated person(s) to retrieve and deliver the cars to the head of the track ( suggest someone who can handle the cars with extreme care) This will also prevent people from just bringing in a car and the risk of it not getting into the computer which can cause problems.
Enough space? The track is about 49' long plus room for a starter and to walk around. 55 feet is best but this leaves little to no room to walk around the ends of the track.
Liquid lubricants and powered cars are not allowed on the track. Gel weights are also prohibited from the used on cars. TUNGSTON Puddy weights are not allowed on cars in any form.
Inform your group that crossing the track at any time may be grounds for PDXDerbyDudes to stop racing and pack up. We want to race and keep racing so keeping the track safe is of high importance. We may also refuse rental on groups who have trouble with this rule.
We bring our track
Set up the track and test it before your race
Will put your cars on the track and encourage your kids to yell and scream to make the race fun.
We will run all the necessary races
We will allow up to one restart per car per lane for failure to stay in the lane (if the car jumps out repeatedly it will be removed from the race, to provide everyone else the chance to run unobstructed)
Provide an Audio system with a microphone for your MC to use or our MC if you so desire.
Provide sounds and music to keep the kids motivated during the race.
Projector capabilities to display the race progress and winners on a wall or provided screen. PDXDerbydudes has a projector for rent.
Let your pinewood derby race representative make any official calls: during race modifications, Lost weight, mid-race graphite, cars that don't finish tuning, etc. We are there to run the cars you will need to officiate your pack's pinewood derby rules.
