In line with the recent directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to plant 100 million coconut trees by 2028, there is an urgent need to identify the coconut varieties to be planted in different areas of the country. Although the results of the recent study titled "Enhancement of the Field Assessment Protocols and Suitability Maps for Coconut" have identified areas suitable for coconut planting. The suitable areas were classified in different classifications (Highly Suitable, Moderately Suitable, and Marginally Suitable). Further, the areas Currently Not Suitable for coconut planting were also identified. The suitable areas identified were generally good for coconut planting regardless of the coconut variety. However, in order to come up with a holistic and well-planned strategy for the massive coconut planting throughout the country, there is an urgent need to identify the specific coconut varieties to be planted, particularly up to the municipal level. Possible reasons for the planned coconut variety could be due to (a) farmers' or stakeholder's preference, (b) the desired coconut product to be produced, (c) the availability of planting materials in the area, among others.
The PCA Regional Managers are hereby instructed to coordinate with their respective Provincial Offices to provide the planned coconut varieties to be planted in their areas up to the Municipal level. An online site was created for this purpose. This can be found on the Coconut Variety section of the https://bit.ly/pca-suitabilitymaps online site. Kindly fill-up the assigned column for the Planned Coconut Varieties to be Planted including the other required information not later than June 7, 2024.
