Plead not Guilty to Traffic Violation

If you feel that traffic violations charges against you are unfair, you have the option to contest them and plead not guilty. This has serious consequences. You must notify the court three business days prior to your hearing (one for your NJ traffic ticket). You must inform the New Jersey municipal court clerk about your intention to plead not guilty to the charges against you. You will need legal evidence and time to appear in court. If you don't have this, you can go to jail. After you have provided the required information to the court, you are able to do the following:

  • Talk to the state prosecutor about a plea deal

  • If there is no agreement, you can proceed to the judge.

  • You can either hire a traffic ticket lawyer, or the court may give you a public defense.

The case could be lost and you may face jail time, fines, imprisonment, traffic violations, suspension of your license, community service, or even jail.

NB You have the right to appeal the decision.

You will not be required to pay any auto-insurance fees if you win the case. Your charges will be dropped. There will also be no fines or penalty and no points added to your driver’s license.

Take note: Consult a traffic ticket lawyer before you decide to take this route.
