Q. What is a Media Server?

A: A Media Server is a piece of software that looks for media files on a disk, or network, and creates a catalogue, or database, of the files it finds. The server uses the file type and metadata embedded in the file to create the database. Client applications can then interrogate this database, and request the server to send the file to them, or to a media renderer for playback. This combination of file store, database and server is often called a media library.

The Media Server on the MyCloud is called Twonky, and uses the DLNA and UPnP protocols to talk to client applications and renderers.

[However, if you feel that secured access to the Twonky UI is necessary, then I would suggest that you disable the Twonky server using the Settings|Media|Media Streaming control, then SSH login as root, and start Twonky using the command:

Q. Why does my media player not show the right track information?

A: A media server looks at the metadata stored in the file, as well as the path and filename. There can be all sorts of metadata tags within a file (Artist, Album Artist, Album, Track Title, Publish Date, Composer, etc, etc), and a media server will fetch these and provide some or all of them to media client applications.

I prefer to do it the easy way though. You have 2 mac addresses for the WD MyCloud. 1 under the device itself and another for the other devices where the twonky server sits as an unknown device on windows 8.1. Block the unknown device mac through the modem/router and when you double click on your WDMyCloud via windows explorer to access network shares, it will log you into the twonky GUI with a nice user friendly interface.

Si I installed PuTTY, shut down Twonky, enabled SSH access, logged in to the Linux as root, and found that there was no twonky.db as suggested. But there was a db directory, so I moved that and db.info into a backup directory, and re-started Twonky. It still seemed to be having trouble.

Everything was going smoothly. Then I started to change the various parameters back to what I wanted: sharing directories, rescan interval, and, finally, the compilation directory names. The latter required a server restart. The log file is now showing the

Is thwere any official or unofficial way to sort files streamed through Twonky DLNA server by their physical name? My WD Live removes numbers from filenames and then sorts by those remaining string which completly breaks the sort order of all my files in albums. As I understand this is an issue in Twonky server used by WD and it does not look like Twonky or WD are planning to fix it. But is there a way to change its configuration either through config interface or by chnging config files directly to make it sor by track number or at least by physical, non-altered name?

What you see may be the DLNA client (?). I notice that what I see on my AVR with Twonky is different when I had an usb3 drive connected to the router which has a DLNA server. Twonky sends much more categories of music than the DLNA.

I see that FreeRip uses the track number as part of the title but not sure but did see stuff in alpha order when using DLNA but looking at the command prompt, the track number is still part of the filename with a dash between the number & name.

Glad to hear, that's what I've found reading on the topic. A few screenshots from the twonky server interface. IP's blocked, but the twonky server sees the control 4 ea1 control via its mac and ip address. What else could I share that would be helpful?

Standard version: Allows consumers to share media by enabling consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers to integrate Digital Media Server (DMS) and Mobile Digital Media Server (M-DMS) capabilities into their devices for non-DRM protected audio, video and photo media types to supported devices. It is available as a standalone server (end user installable) or an embedded server.

I wonder if anyone can help me.....I cant get my Beosound 5 Encore to see my NAS (running Twonky server). It is a QNAP TS-419 P + and Twonky came with it. Everything looks like its setup ok. I can browse Twonky through Internet Explorer. The Beosound connects to Radio stations fine and has an IP address in the right subnet. Upnp is enabled on the router and NAS. The permissions appear ok on the media folders on the NAS and I can see them in windows explorer. I dont suppose anyone out there might have any suggestions? I think there is a way to test Upnp from Windows Media player (WMP) but I cant see the NAS in WMP (unless I map a drive to the NAS from Windows).

The plot thickens. My play station can see the Twonkyserver and everything works with it but still my Beosound cannot see the Twonkyserver. I install Twonkyserver on my laptop and the Beosound can see it no problem.....

Thanks alot for the reply :) They are on the same switch and both plugged in via ethernet. At the moment both the QNAP and my Beosound are being assigned addresses by DHCP to rule out any DNS or IP addressing insonsitsency I could have made assiging manually. Just installed BubbleUPnP on to my Android handset and it can see the Twonky server too. I thought it might be a share permission issue once I found out that the Beosound wont find the Twonkyserver unless there are files for it to 'see'. However, there have always been files for it to 'see' as I added a few as soon as the QNAP was up with Twonky Server running on it. I just dont get it. Im almost at the stage of sending the Beosound back to see if there is something wrong with it. Im running the latest firmware on the QNAP and Beosound. Its doing my head in.

The Twonkyserver sees the Music files no problem. The config pages work fine. What I had thought was that perhaps the QNAP security was blocking the Twonkyserver somehow but it would seem not since I can see the Twonkyserver from other devices. I am going to call Bang and Olufsen now. :( Thanks again!

B and O have been a great help via a really nice chap in London from Polaris Networks. We have rebuilt the entire QNAP from the bottom up. Testing it using UPnP with Foobar2000, PS3 and all can see Twonkyserver except Beosound. I'll post up anything I find in case it helps others if / when we fix it. Currently in Denmarks corner....

Thanks Ari! The QNAP does not have a friewall on it. I have checked that port 1900 is open on the QNAP and it is. If I install Twonkyserver on to my laptop the BS5 encore sees it straight away. It has been rebooted and factory defaulted numerous times but will do it after each reconfig of QNAP if thats the case.

TwonkyMedia server (TMS) is DLNA-compliant[1] UPnP AV server software originally offered by TwonkyVision GmbH. TMS runs on Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, iOS, Android and QNX operating systems. TwonkyMedia server can be used to share and stream media to most UPnP AV or DLNA-compliant clients, in addition to non-UPnP devices through the HTML, RSS, and JSON supported front ends. After the PacketVideo acquisition of Berlin-based TwonkyVision GmbH by 17 October 2006,[2] Twonky was renamed PVConnect in November 2007,[3][4][5] but the name was changed back to TwonkyMedia server by 7 January 2010.[6][7][8] Corporate parent NTT DOCOMO sold PacketVideo NorthAmerica and Europe to Lynx Technology on 10 May 2015 and PacketVideo Japan exactly one year later on 10 May 2016 transferring the Twonky product line to Lynx, renaming TwonkyMedia Server to Twonky Server.[9][10][11]

Sorry, I can't offer anything. I do use a DLNA server (Serviio), but don't run it on a NAS. Odds are if the Twonky channel was removed from the Channel Store, then Twonky has decided to stop supporting it.

I have no idea if there's any other DLNA server product that can be run from a WDMyCloud NAS device. Serviio has versions for QNAP and Synology, but I have no idea if either might work on your device.

I am also having trouble with the Twonky app on a WD Ex2 with OS5. After installing the app from the WD app store and selecting my Roku device the app prompted me to install the Twonky channel on the Roku, the Roku responded and installed the channel, all my content in the shared folders I set up is available on the Twonky app via my computer but when I click on the Twonky Channel on my Roku I get the message: Channel not available: twonky is no longer available, you may want to remove the channel from the home screen.

The Twonky app itself is in fact no longer supported on the roku. You have to configure the app on the WdMycloud ex2. I can walk you through what I did. It is stable for now. Let me know. In the end you will be using the roku media server app to access your content from the ex2.

Do you have the Twonky app installed on your ex2 ? To do that go to your dashboard. Then to Apps. you see the Apps choice across the top. There are many apps to can install. Choose Twonky and install it. The next step is to configure Twonky. Once you have installed it it will appear on the left as installed. Click on the twonky server button then choose to configure. The configure choice is right above the run button. The choice will open the configure widow. Then go to shared folders on the left. Navigate over to create this .....Your home drive needs to be where you navigate.

It sounds like Twonky will work as a DLNA server, in addition to their dedicated app. Plex will do this as well, and I believe Emby also does. DLNA servers are visible automatically using Roku Media Player. It won't have as nice a user interface as the Plex or Emby dedicated channels, but should work just as well for media playback.

I have never figured out how to use Plex as a DNLA server. I do know it is possible. There have been problems between Twonky and WD that seem to have come wtih firmware updates. The techs at WD are quickly learning. WD has an ios app which makes it very easy to reach my drive on all my mac devices. I believe the Roku has enough of a user base the make that a possibility for the Roku as well. I do know that twonky was used as WD's built in DNLA software prior to going to WD os5. be457b7860
