He was the twenty-fifth bishop of Clermont in Auvergne (France), who founded a monastery with a hospice in Manglieu, in the church where he was buried in 662. Five years after the bishopric, he resigned and went on a pilgrimage to Rome, but had to return to take his post again by popular acclaim. He fought the heresies of Novatian and Jovinian. He founded the abbey of Manlieu and the church of San Sinforiano de Clermont, which later took his name. He is known as a scholar, and as a benevolent man of incomparable goodness, loved by all.
The painting has its origin in the first hermitage of the area, built in 1574. According to popular legend, once upon a time the painting appeared floating on the shore of the San Ginés pond, but such a belief lacks historical accuracy. There is proof that in 1623, it was donated by Don Francisco García Santaella, the Captain and Administrator of Lanzarote, for the reconstruction of the primitive hermitage.
