The composition is made up of eight figures, clearly inspired by Murillo’s work ‘Saint Elizabeth of Hungary healing the mangy’. The characters are situated on the inside of a building where two Islamic-inspired arches can be seen.
In the centre, we see a female figure dressed in white, the top part of her body is covered by a red velvet jacket with leather trimmings.
With her left hand, she is giving a coin to a beggar, while the right one is holding a book of prayers.
Below, there is another woman, carrying a naked child who is holding out his hand to the protagonist.
The right side of the canvas is occupied by four beggars. Behind them, there is an older figure wrapped in a dark cape beside two young people.
This accomplished canvas, painted by Manuel Ponce de León, was exhibited publicly in the Las Palmas competition in 1847 held in the Gabinete Literario, entitled ‘La Caridad’. The fabric was originally owned by Ms. Hipólita Joven de León, as the inscription of the work reads. Subsequently, it was located at a home in Tafira (Gran Canaria), before moving to its current location in the capital of Lanzarote.
Work completed by the 2nd Bachillerato class for Religious Studies at César Manrique Secondary School, Arrecife (school year 2022-2023)
