It was donated to the church by Captain Ginés de Castro due to its designation as a Parish in 1798. The statue is supported by a wooden frame below the garment. The tunic is made from sackcloth glued with layers of plaster. The face and hands are made of cedar and the eyes from glass. In the parochial archives, it is written that ‘the image is maintained just as it was when it came to La Habana, without varnish nor vestments.’ It is known that the statue has “a French origin with some Andalusian artistic influences, although its origin is Latin American”.
The Virgin of the Rosary of the church of San Ginés, coming from Cuba, was donated by Captain Don Ginés De Castro, better known as “the old man”, on the occasion of its designation as a parish in 1798. She is the Patron of the Order of Preachers, of Colombia and of the Military Emergency Unit of Spain. It is said that in 1200, she appeared to Domingo de Guzmán in a chapel with a rosary in her hands, which she used to teach him to pray so he could preach.
