In English, we have different ways to talk about the future. In football, choosing the right structure depends on your evidence and your calendar!
1. Present Continuous (100% Fixed Plans & Schedules)
We use the Present Continuous when a plan is completely organized, safe, and written in an official calendar (like the FIFA schedule). It usually has a specific day, time, or place.
Structure: Subject + am / is / are + Verb-ing + Time
“Spain is playing their first match on June 14th at 9:00 PM.” (The tickets are sold, the stadium is ready).
2. Be Going To (Value: Intentions & Physical Evidence)
We use Be Going To for two specific football situations:
Intentions (Tactics):** What the coach or the team wants to do on the pitch.
“We **are going to attack from the wings.”
Physical Evidence: A prediction about something happening *right now* because you can see it with your eyes.
“Look! The goalkeeper is on the floor. The striker is going to score!”
