Patient Safety in Liposuction

Patients are increasingly coming in for liposuction, liposuction, and other procedures. Plastic surgeons need to improve patient safety. Modern plastic surgery technology has been specifically designed to increase patient safety. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Patient Safety Committee has created a liposuction advisory for physicians to help them ensure patient safety. This practice advisory provides guidelines for a variety of approaches that can be used to diagnose, manage, or prevent certain conditions and diseases. It also anticipates the need to approach some patients differently.
Recommendations to Practice for Liposuction
Liposuction techniques A doctor can choose from a number of liposuction methods, such as laser-assisted or ultrasound assisted procedures. Because patients have unique issues, a single technique for lipolysis will not be able to work for them all. For each patient to choose the right technique, the plastic surgeon must take into account all factors including the patient's health, expected amount of fat to remove and the number to be treated. Clinical studies show that patients may be more at risk if liposuction is performed while they are still awake.
Different types of cannulas: A small stainless-steel tube is used to extract excess fat from the skin. There are many types of cannulas, including suction-assisted and power-assisted. Power-assisted Lipolysis uses cannulas that are smaller and more flexible than standard suction-assisted cannulas. The surgeon should decide which cannula will be most appropriate for a particular patient, depending on the technique used and how much fat is being removed.
Anesthesia Many anesthesia and anesthesia combinations can be used for liposuction. An accredited physician may administer anesthesia. Anesthesia may be administered under the supervision of a physician by a certified registered nurse anesthetist, or any other qualified health care provider. The anesthetist responsible must be present at the operation room during the administration of the anesthetic. General anesthesia can safely be used in the ambulatory setting. This is particularly useful for complicated procedures, as it allows precise dosage, controlled patient movement, and airway management. Infiltrate solutions that contain local anesthetics are suitable for small-volume liposuction.
Patients selection:Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction. The surgeon should conduct a complete physical examination and assess the preoperative history to determine whether the patient is suitable for liposuction. It is also important to set realistic expectations for the patient.
The surgeon will determine the right amount of fat to remove after determining that the patient is a suitable candidate. It is important that you distinguish between total fat removed from total aspirate. Accredited facilities can perform large-volume lipoplasty (removal exceeding 5000cc). Post-operative vital signs and urinary output should both be checked overnight for patients who are undergoing this procedure Ambulatory Anesthesia.
Multiple procedures There are a few combinations of plastic surgeries that involve liposuction. Liposuction may be required for some patients in certain circumstances.
Possible complications The surgeon needs to be aware that there may be complications after the procedure. Seromas, minor contour irregularities or fat embolisms are possible complications.
Qualification and training of providers: Any plastic surgeon who performs fat removal procedures in any setting in surgery must have a basic education.
Selection and accreditation of a facility. As important as the qualifications of the surgeon is the location. The facility where liposuction is performed should be accredited or licensed by the state.
