Hidden treasures of the Soča...
One single day, but a palette of emotions from the gentle morning at the campsite to the mystical landscapes of the Soča Trail between magical waterfalls, sleeping calves, suspension bridge and improvised hitchhike An enchanted interlude crowned by an exceptional melt-in-the-mouth local specialty the Kobariški štruklji...
From the Kozjak waterfall to the Kobariški štruklji: our Soča treasures...
Hike: Slap Kozjak + Soška Pot - 14.6 km 🚶
First wake-up at the wonderful Camping Lazar (Instagram: @.campinglazar). No rain last night, but heavy dew and a chilly morning. The sun, if it decides to break through the clouds, won’t reach our tent before 9:45. We have a quiet breakfast, then get ready for the day’s hike: the Soča Trail. We start with the Napoleon Bridge, which we cross before turning left onto a lovely path. We walk through vast flower-filled meadows, where we spot young calves still half-asleep against their mothers. Then, surprise: an unusual wooden hut offers self-service cans in exchange for donations, engraved quotes in four languages, and above all, an installation dedicated to the “5 energies”. A sign explains: according to quantum physics, everything is energy in motion. These places are said to foster healing and creativity. A mystical and poetic atmosphere. The trail then follows the turquoise river, before climbing toward an old war site. Trenches, tunnels dug into the rock... a place full of history, very well preserved, almost unreal. The forest is beautiful, not too dense, carpeted with grass and ferns. We continue to a first waterfall, already very pretty. After buying a ticket, we reach the famous Kozjak waterfall. It appears at the end of a wooden walkway, nestled in a sort of rocky cauldron, bathed in light and greenery where water droplets sparkle. The place is magical. The powerful waterfall contrasts with the calm of the setting. We take photos, of course, but above all, we take it in. We follow the path to a viewpoint, then reconnect with the Soča Trail. Thanks to GPS, we navigate through splendid meadows. The trail becomes wilder, with pebbles, roots, and soft earth. At one point, we reach the river. Jenny, bothered by pain under her foot and a cramp in her right leg, decides to soak her legs. Good idea. We also take out our cheese sandwiches: we realize we haven’t been eating enough these past few days. The walk is long but stunning, and ends beautifully: open fields, wide views over the mountains, and a big suspension bridge which Ahmed crosses joyfully. Then we head to Trnovo ob Soči, hoping to catch a bus. On the way, we greet three very calm donkeys. But the bus is late. So Jenny tries hitchhiking. Almost instant success! A young Austrian woman, Nadine, a ski and kayak instructor, picks us up in her van and drops us off at the supermarket in Kobarid. Thank you, Nadine! Problem: the supermarket is closed... Jenny heads into town to pick up a few things ahead of the Sunday holiday, while Ahmed returns to the campsite to work. Nice surprise: the mountains finally reveal themselves, and the view is magnificent. Simple but tasty dinner: soup, then pasta with pepper sauce, cheese, fresh parsley from the garden and walnuts. For dessert: Greek yogurt with jam and a local specialty: Kobariški štruklji, a wonder. The campsite’s restaurant is fantastic… too bad our budget is tight. We end the day with a hot shower and a little movie in the tent. A rich, varied day, full of surprises and beauty.
