AY Honors afford a rich and varied palette of topics for young people to explore and experience. Though the honors are tailored to young people from grades 5 through 10, even older people enjoy earning them.

Throughout each day at the Camporee various on-site activities offer enriching experiences for Pathfinders. Work towards earning new honors, explore new adventures, sharpen your skills, and check out special interest areas.

Thank-you for being willing to explore teaching an honor, activity, or special interest at the International Camporee. This is a fantastic opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of many Pathfinders. Without your commitment and dedication this event would not be possible.

Teaching honors at the International Camporee is different from teaching honors to an individual club or small group. Honors taught at the International Camporee should be designed to accommodate several hundred Pathfinders a day. Since each honor is unique, different teaching styles fit different honors and some honors are either difficult or not practical to teach in the Camporee setting.

What to Expect

Free airplane rides are available during Camporee for young people ages 8 -17. These are sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association and numerous volunteer pilots. They take place at the edge of the main activity area by the main runway. These rides count as part of the requirements for the Aviators honor, but the pathfinder is not required to be working on that honor. Pathfinders are REQUIRED to preregister for airplane rides. As part of preregistration a single page will be printed that requires a parent signature. This paper must be brought with the pathfinder to camporee. Most of the Pathfinder honor classes were taught by SCC Pathfinder area coordinators, the Pathfinder advisory team, and SCC office personnel. Two of the honors were taught by Southeastern California Conference Pathfinder leaders: Christian Storytelling by Joel Milla and Fire Building by JJ and Mercy Martinez.

Pathfinder is pleased to announce that founding partner Lynn G. Bellenger, PE, Fellow ASHRAE, who passed away in October 2011, has been inducted into the ASHRAE Hall of Fame. This award honors deceased members who made milestone contributions to the growth of ASHRAE-related technology and the organizational development of ASHRAE.

They include suggested You Tube videos explaining the different concepts and may include videos that instruct how to make hands-on projects, too. Pathfinders are encouraged to amass as many skills and experiences as possible whenever honors are offered through their clubs, conferences, and unions. But camporees are an especially good occasion to earn lots of honors in a compressed timeframe. With this in mind, more than 170 honors classes are available for the Pathfinders attending the 2019 Chosen International Camporee in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The recognition granted to the recipient of the annual Pathfinder Award will be enhanced with a $500 prize.

The Pathfinder Award honors an outstanding UAF staff member who exemplifies compassion and dedication to the success of Alaska Native and rural students. It was established by the Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development.

The nomination period for the 2017 award has been extended to Feb. 10 at 5 p.m.

Non-faculty staff members at all UAF campuses and learning centers are eligible for the award. Letters of nomination should detail how the employee:

Kelly Ciera Ingram, Emily Bray and Sara Kimbrell partnered with the School's Young Breast Cancer Survivors Network (YBCSN) and Think Well: Healthy Living to Improve Cognitive Function for a research preceptorship as a part of their honors course curriculum in the Spring 2015 semester.

Collaborating with UAB School of Nursing Doctoral Fellows Jennifer Bail and Timiya Nolan, Program Manager Silvia Camata, and Professor and Associate Dean for Research Karen Meneses, PhD, RN, FAAN, the honors students helped deliver a breast health program for a Latina population in Pelham, Ala.

"This experience taught us to think about patient care more holistically, versus from a purely clinical standpoint," said Kimbrell. ""It made us think about what is going to happen when a patient leaves the hospital, and we learned to recognize everyone we treat as an individual who needs individualized care."One of the benefits for the honors students has been the immersion in the School's interdisciplinary research setting where they learned about many of the side effects of breast cancer, including "chemo brain." They also worked alongside Meneses, an internationally known breast cancer survivorship expert, assisting with a support group at the American Cancer Society and learning the needs of young breast cancer survivors.

As s continuation of their work this semester, honors students Ingram, Bray and Kimbrell are volunteering at the YBCSN 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Survivors Workshop on April 18, 2015. The event also emphasizes the importance of holistic care, offering sessions on breast cancer risks and genetics, family and relationships and a yoga soul dance lesson.
