Research directions
This research focuses on leveraging domain expertise to enhance sensor-based models for complex systems. By integrating domain-specific knowledge, we aim to improve the accuracy and reliability of data-driven models, making them more adept at predicting system behaviors and outcomes. This approach not only enhances the performance of predictive models but also ensures that they are robust across varied real-world scenarios.
Our research develops intelligent AI systems that predict outcomes and prevent undesirable events before they occur. These systems utilize advanced machine learning algorithms and big data analytics to foresee potential problems and intervene proactively. This dual focus allows for a more comprehensive approach to decision-making and management, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and safety in critical sectors.
The research focuses on developing advanced control strategies that leverage digital twin technology. This research integrates stochastic modeling to account for uncertainties in system behaviors, and robust control methods to ensure performance stability under diverse operational conditions. We aim to enhance the predictive accuracy and operational efficiency of digital twins, enabling real-time decision-making and optimization in complex environments.
Dr. Phat K. Huynh is an assistant professor in Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at North Carolina A&T State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering at University of South Florida. He has published extensively in prestigious peer-reviewed journals like Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, Sleep, IISE Transactions on Healthcare Systems Engineering, and PLOS ONE. He is also the technical consultant for Niura, a start-up valued at more than $8 million, pioneering EEG-capable earbuds for real-time stress level detection. His work has been recognized with awards like the IISE Quality Control and Reliability Engineering Division William A. Golomski Award and Doug Ogden Award from Society of Reliability Engineers (SRE) for several best technical papers.

12/2024: We are excited to share that NCA&T has been awarded a $2.6M grant from CESER for our project, "P4REST: Platforms for Secure and Resilient Electric Power System Research Testing and Demonstration." Our team, led by Dr. Hieu Nguyen and including Co-PIs—Dr. Phat Huynh, Dr. Mahmoud Nabil Mahmoud, and Dr. Om Prakash Yadav, will focus on enhancing energy security and resilience against diverse threats.
11/2024: The work, "Deep Learning-based Integrated System for Intraoperative Blood Loss Quantification in Surgical Sponges" co-authored by Dang Nguyen, Minh Huu Nhat Le, Trung Q. Le, Chinyere Charles-Okezie, Michael J. Diaz, Cameron Sabet, Hung The Dang, Tuan Nguyen, Hoan Nguyen, Minh Tran, Nguyen Quoc Khanh Le, and Aaron Muncey, has been published on IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics.
9/2024: The work, "A Narrative Review of the Relationship Between Head and Neck Cancer and Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Clinical Studies and Statistical Analysis," co-authored by Toan Le, Abhay Sharma MD, Arveity Setty MD, Miran Blanchard MD, Hon Keung Tony Ng PhD, Yi Luo PhD, and Trung Le PhD, has been published on Sleep Medicine Reviews.
8/2024: PASSIO Lab moved to Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at North Carolina A&T State University.
5/2024: Our work on "Leveraging Multi-Criteria Integer Programming Optimization for Effective Team Formation" has been published in IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies. A huge thanks to my co-authors Pallavi Singh, Dang Nguyen, Dr. Trung (Tim) Le, and Dr. Wilfrido Moreno.
