Parthenon at Illinois studies the long history of replication through the lens of historic plaster casts of the Parthenon friezes at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Spurlock Museum of World Cultures. The project adapts cutting edge 3D digitization and manufacturing techniques to make digital and physical replicas of our cast collection. Through this project, we seek to understand how replicas support engagement with cultural heritage collections, promote deeper understandings of history, spark curiosity about new manufacturing techniques, and create space for reflection.
This project received funding through the University of Illinois' Campus Research Board in March 2026.

Replicas have long played a vital role in the preservation, study, and interpretation of cultural heritage. For centuries, plaster casts allowed students, scholars, and museum visitors to engage with monuments and works of art that were otherwise inaccessible. Today, digital technologies continue this tradition by creating new opportunities for research, teaching, preservation, and public engagement. By examining both historic and contemporary forms of replication, Parthenon at Illinois explores how copies shape our understanding of the ancient world and the ways in which cultural heritage is transmitted across generations.
Parthenon at Illinois brings together expertise in classical studies, museum collections, digital humanities, and emerging manufacturing technologies to:
• Digitize historic plaster casts of the Parthenon frieze through high-resolution 3D scanning and photogrammetry.
• Create digital and physical replicas that expand access to the collection.
• Investigate how replicas influence learning, interpretation, and public engagement.
• Explore questions of authenticity, preservation, and cultural memory.
• Develop new resources for teaching, research, and community outreach.
• Contribute to broader conversations about the role of replication in museums and cultural heritage institutions.
The University of Illinois is home to an important collection of historic plaster casts of the Parthenon Frieze, metopes, and sculptures housed at the Spurlock Museum of World Cultures. Originally created as educational tools, these casts reflect a rich tradition of using replicas to teach the history, art, and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean world. Today, they provide a unique opportunity to examine the history of replication itself while exploring how new technologies can extend the educational value of historic collections.
The project combines technical innovation with humanistic inquiry. Alongside the creation of digital models and physical reproductions, the research team investigates how visitors, students, and scholars engage with replicas in both physical and digital environments. Through exhibitions, educational programming, and digital resources, Parthenon at Illinois seeks to foster meaningful conversations about the relationship between originals, copies, and the future of cultural heritage preservation.
As the project develops, the team will continue digitizing the collection, creating new replicas, and sharing research findings with academic and public audiences. By bringing together historic plaster casts and contemporary technologies, Parthenon at Illinois demonstrates how the study of the past can inspire new approaches to learning, discovery, and engagement in the present.
