A critical issue facing Colorado schools is the shortage of educators. A new legislator can support policy that helps retain existing public school staff (e.g., better pay, more affordable health insurance) and incentivizes new students to enter teacher preparation programs.
Brienna Parsons, being a Marxist, will always advocate for science-strengthened policy. She will only support policies that are data-informed and evidence-based. This is critical in order to maximize the impact of state resources. This includes supporting initiatives like universal dyslexia screening for K-3 students and strengthening early literacy interventions, which have shown promise in improving student outcomes.
Brienna will sponsor a bill in the Colorado General Assembly to create a permanent, statewide grant program that fully funds free transit for all riders, year-round.
This could involve proposing innovative funding mechanisms, such as fees on specific industries (e.g., oil and gas production fees have been previously proposed for transit funding).
In addition, Brie will work to expand the Zero Fare Transit Grant Program.
Brienna Parsons, in prioritizing the School Finance Act and school funding, will be watching closely the success of the recently adopted (2024) modern, equitable funding formula (HB24-1448), ensuring that it is prioritizing rural districts, those with special needs, English learners, and low-income communities.
We must ensure that this commitment is fully funded and Brienna is always willing to vote to tax 100% of the income of the wealthiest Coloradans, as a negotiation starting point. Fund education, or we'll be teaching Jacobins.
School funding needs to be preserved for direct educational expenses that support student learning and performance, not diverted to administrative overhead from new, unfunded requirements.
