I was enrolled in an introduction to statistics course during the fall term of my first year. I still remember my instructor at the time, Dr. Ammar Sarhan, being very enthusiastic about teaching statistics. His enthusiasm about the introductory material made me wonder how fun statistics could get once exploring deeper and more advanced topics. So, starting from the initial stages of learning about the summary statistics of a data set, my curiosity has led me to pursue a path in mathematics and statistics. In fact, I can confidently say now, that choosing this path was a fantastic decision.
At the end of my third year of university, after taking most of the courses offered by the department at that undergraduate level, I decided to reach out to Dr. Andrew Irwin to apply what I’ve learned in my courses to real-life data. During that summer of 2021, I was fortunate enough to have been awarded a departmental research scholarship to model and perform statistical analyses with phytoplankton data. During the last years of my undergraduate degree, I have accepted the role of full-time marker for the course “Introduction to Data Mining with R”, as well as a role of a midterm marker for 3 other courses, “Matrix Theory and Linear Algebra”, “Statistical Methods for Data Analysis and Inference”, and “Probability”. In addition, I was elected president of the Dalhousie Undergraduate Mathematics And Statistics Society. Beginning my journey as a master's student, I became the treasurer of University of Alberta's Society In Graduate Mathematics And Statistics Executive (SIGMAS). I also volunteered my time as a graduate representative for the Women in Mathematics group at the University of Alberta.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have also gained practical experience as a content developer for Nova Scotia Math Circles, and served as a private tutor for many mathematics and statistics courses. I also have a rich personal life that adds depth to my experiences. I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, before making Halifax, NS, Canada my home in 2009. I've moved to Edmonton, AB, Canada to pursue my master's degree in 2022 and am expected to graduate in September 2025. I also have two cats named Mew and Kumquat!
