zine gif
this june (2026), in celebration of PAPER BABY, i invited friends to gather at casa caracol for a morning of plant drawing. we collected flowers, petals, and fruits from the yard and then created images using their beautiful pigments for color. at the end, several people opted to leave their drawings with me so i could scan and compile them into a little zine.Â
for the design, i use the tiny manila envelopes from the seed library as "containers" for the zine, with a small circle of dirt from the yard glued onto the front. the zine itself is a small accordion with scans of everyone's drawings as well as some verb-oriented reflections on what we "did" together. at the end i included a QR code that links to this webpage where i've gathered the full-size images of the drawings as well as some process pictures. i hope you enjoy!

FINAL THOUGHTS
i love when a project can keep tendrilling out into new forms. this all started sometime last year when i was sitting with corinne and yaz in the backyard at casa caracol with a pomegranate. i started to rub the seeds on my paper and trace all the negative space and color contours. what began with a few seconds of smearing resulted in an hour or so of meditative drawing. it felt a lot like the slowness of translating a poem.
over the next few months i made several of these drawings in a little notebook. later, when i installed PAPER BABY, i decided to include the notebook surrounded by scans of the drawings and to host an event where people could make drawings of their own. it was a wonderful way to share time together. and now the zine has felt like a way for that time to extend. there's been the time i've spent scanning, doing layout, printing, folding, gluing, assembling, and creating this webpage. but then there's also the time people might spend with their copy of the zine, showing it to friends, remembering that morning years from now.
if you'd like to print your own copy of the zine, feel free to email me at ryanhgreene1 [at] gmail -- i'd be happy to send you the file with some instructions.
