The things we are taught in Interact is Service Above Self. In the club we do a lot of community service work out of the goodness of our hearts. Throughout the year we volunteer for multiple events. The first one we volunteered for took place on October 19th at William Jessup University. It was for an organization called Feed My Starving Children. We went in at 8 am. At the event we packed meals for people in other countries. They aren't as fortunate as us to have access to food like we do. They showed a video before explaining what they are about and it had clips of people they helped. It was a touching video and made us excited to start packing. In order to pack we had to wear hairnets and gloves. It’s a process with exact steps that you must follow. It was a fun experience to work with a team of people I had just met a few minutes before. The station had six people on each side. On my side, there were three from a rotary club and the other three were me and my two friends. There was music and a lot of conversation going on. It was a very enjoyable moment. To be able to have fun doing something for a good cause made me want to do it all the time if I could. When they would announce the time like fifteen minutes it was always shocking because it didn't feel like it took that long. It was my second time doing it and it was fun both times. Last year I got to do the labeling station where you put the stickers on the bags before food is packed into them. The stickers state the expiration dates. It was definitely much easier. But it was good for me to experience both. It was very enjoyable overall and I hope to do it next year as well. I encourage others to try it too and bring a friend.
We Need More Electives!
Here at VHS we don't really have a lot of elective classes to choose from.
You have VAPA, visual and performing arts, which is music. Our teacher Mr. Rettinhouse here at Victory is the one who’s in charge of it. You learn to play guitar, piano, and draw. Also another elective class we offer is Drama. Ms. Gamble, another teacher here at VHS, teaches that class. We read plays, create our own skits, do monologues and soon will do a film unit. We also recently have a P.E class that is provided by Mr.Baham at 6th period. All though these are really cool classes we still should have a lot more. For example, a culinary class, or a life skills class that teaches us how to fill out an application for an apartment, learn how to do taxes, how to pay bills, and buy a house. All these things we need to know in life for the future that we are going to need to know how to do. Or have a health and safety class to see what it would be like to take care of a child. Or learn things that your going to need in order to know when you have a child. Basically learn things that we are going to need to know in the future. Some other high school provide a foreign language class, where you can learn a foreign language like spanish, french, italian i think that would be really cool to have a Victory, because knowing a second language can be very helpful and also fun to learn! Overall, VIctory has some cool electives that are also helpful. It would be even better if we had more electives to choose from that are fun and interesting and helpful in the future.
Antonio Brown Article
By Dominic McKibbon
Antonio Brown is one of the biggest examples of becoming fame to lame. After finishing a very successful career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Brown signed a thirty-million dollar contract with the Oakland Raiders. Everyone in the bay area was so excited when this contract was signed. These fans would have no idea of what’s to come. The main problem that caused Antonio Brown to be defiant was the helmet issue. The NFL decided that the helmet Brown wore was too old and possibly not safe because of its age. This causedAntonio Brown to feud with the NFL and the Raiders organization. Brown did not show up to mini camp, that wasn’t considered a big deal at the time but later on when he started not showing up to training camp it was becoming an issue. The camp issue with Brown could’ve been less of a big deal if it wasn’t for what Antonio Brown was doing on social media. He would tweet and post toxic content on his Twitter and Instagram. This went all the way into the preseason. Finally in mid September the Raiders released Brown. This was a huge disappointment because the Raiders with Brown at receiver had so much potential. After being released Brown was picked up by the New England patriots who signed him to a fifteen-million dollar deal. In his first game he played incredibly. He had multiple catches and a touchdown in what led to a Patriots victory. But just after one game it was discovered that Antonio Brown was involved in a possible sexual assault. This led to the Patriots releasing him back to free agency and Brown has not played a down in the NFL since. Right now he is facing a trial and is trying to get back into the NFL. While he waits to be signed Brown has returned to his old college, Central Michigan. There have been teams that have recently showed interest in the veteran receiver and with playoffs approaching it is highly possible that Brown might play again this season. We’ll just have to see.

The Sacramento region has seen an uptick in sideshows in recent years, with one California Highway Patrol spokesman saying the illegal stunt driving hit the streets in north Sacramento County nearly every weekend. They are often organized discreetly in private social media groups, and the biggest ones can draw hundreds of participants, these most commonly in the summertime. During some events few to no arrests are made because of their large size, when it comes to sideshows and drag racing, the California Highway Patrol handles those calls.. Officers often have to drop many arrests to pursue more dangerous offenders. A representative for the California Highway Patrol said “Street Racing and Sideshows will not be tolerated by the California Highway Patrol or any law enforcement agency. Participating in this illegal activity could end you up in jail. These activities are very dangerous for the drivers, passengers, and bystanders.”
The stunt driving community has recently started to change with the introduction of social media and the influx of a younger crowd. This has led to people acting more dangerous in the pursuit of internet fame. “They’re out here flexing, trying to show off, revving their engines, they’re doing that because they’re trying to impress people. That’s not everyone, but they kill it for the rest of us.” Said a local car enthusiast in an interview with the Sacramento Bee. One of the biggest reasons why dozens of car enthusiasts meet in public parking lots, and race on deserted roads surrounding the city is the lack of a location to do either legally.
Why everyone should learn a musical instrument
By Yaro Maslyanchuk
09/27/19
Music has always been a part of this world, even since before Jesus. The theory of music really sprung up around 1722, a French composer named Jean-Philippe Rameau, wrote a book, Called “Treatise On Harmony.” This book changed the way we looked at music. At that time this book introduced Concepts such as the tonic and Dominant chords, this book at the time quickly became popular and known as “ The book of music theory.” From this book many people have started expanding their minds on music, and different arts of such nature. Music quickly became more popular and a way to express feelings and emotion through a series of notes. This is why I personally believe people should learn a musical instrument. Not only will it expand their mind of the thoughts they already have, but it will open a new world of understanding music and how it is composed. Before I learned an instrument I was just living my normal life and not thinking about music as I do today. Once I took on the challenge to master the guitar, i realized how important building knowledge on different subjects is, like music for example. It’s a whole different type of experience learning to create and copy others music. Most people in high school don’t really have any hobby or activity they experience other than video games and literally doing nothing. Taking on the task to learn an instrument will teach them patience and dedication, which Will be extremely important later in their life. Taking on music will give them some thing to do, some thing to look forward to when they get home. The best part about learning music and theory all together, is that there is so much of it to learn. It’s incredible the amount of studying and researching you can do and still not know every thing. I’ve been playing for two years extremely dedicated, and I can tell you that my knowledge is about ¼ complete.
Expectations For This NBA Season
By Dominic McKibbon
This year could possibly be the most exciting season in NBA history. There are new super teams that are looking to take control of the league, as well as new rookies that are looking to prove that they belong in the league. The two biggest team upgrades are definitely the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. The Lakers have added Danny Green and Anthony Davis and other very good role players. The Clippers have added Kawhi Leonard from the championship Toronto Raptors and the Paul George from the Oklahoma City Thunder. And they still have their entire roster from last season who went to the playoffs and almost upset the Golden State Warriors. These two Los Angeles teams will obviously be in the front running for the NBA title this season. Although the Los Angeles teams are the biggest story line this season, there are some other big teams that were formed in the off season. The Brooklyn Nets have signed Kyrie Irving from the Boston Celtics who have been successful these past few seasons with Irving running the point guard position. They also brought in the two time NBA finals MVP and league MVP, Kevin Durant. Durant will not be playing this season because of an injury in last season’s NBA finals but he could possibly return for the playoffs and until that happens he will be a good mentor to the young players of the team. The last team that have made big upgrades to their team are the Houston Rockets. The Rockets have only added one player but that one player could be the difference between a championship and another second round exit. That player is Russell Westbrook, gaining MVP of the league, just three years ago and he is still at the same level of playing that he was at three years ago. This was told without mentioning that the other star on the Rockets is former MVP James Harden who is arguably better now then he was when he won the MVP. This dynamic duo will be tough to beat this season. And last but not least, the most exciting rookie to come into the league since Lebron James, Zion Williamson. Williamson has been on NBA scout’s radar since he has been in high school. After a great season at Duke he is looking to be a rookie sensation and obviously take home the rookie of the year award. The only problem is that Williamson has a reputation of being injury prone. He missed time in his one year of college because of a foot injury and he is going to miss the first part of the NBA season because of another injury. Unfortunately the much awaited debut of Zion Williamson will have to wait a couple of weeks. This season is going to be a memorable one. It is going to be fun to sit down and watch a game with all of these exciting teams.
Don't Go To Sleep, Go to Night School
By Shania Remine
Here at Victory High School we have a night school program! Kids from all Rocklin high schools, including Rocklin and Whitney come over to Victory for night school because VHS is the only school who offers it. If you need to make up credits or make up a class, this program really helps out with that. Night school starts at 4:30 and ends at 7:30 and it's only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays Mr. Baham, a teacher here at VHS, is the principal. On Thursdays, Mr. Thibideau, another teacher here at Victory is the principal. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the only days Victory offers night school. Attendance is also very important. You can't miss more than 6 hours or you will be automatically dropped. So being present is a big thing to be able to earn the credits you need. Night school runs for 12 weeks, ending in December. The general consensus is that this night school program is amazing. It's very helpful and very needed. All kids here at Victory are more than happy with it. I think a lot more kids need to look into it. Thanks to night school i'm going to be able to graduate on time. And just how it helped me, it can help a lot more other kids who need the credits or be able to graduate on time. Or maybe even graduate early! Who wouldn't want that? Not to mention the teachers at night school are super cool and very helpful. If you struggle with anything, they are more than happy to help you with it. Overall im more than thankful for this night school program. Thank you VHS for offering it and giving students a chance to be able to make up credits that they need in order to graduate.
Sierra College Field Trip
By: Kennedy Bell
On October 4th, Victory students were invited to a field trip to Sierra College. Me and my friends decided to go. At the college we were met with many other schools on the trip as well. The campus was full of kids from different schools. We started out the field trip on a quick tour around the campus for about 10 minutes. It was given to us by a girl who attended the school. She answered any questions we had about the school. After that we were left on our own to visit the classrooms that were opened to share their programs with us. I stayed with three of my other friends at first. We were given a little paper to fill out which required us to visit 4 different programs and write about what we learned. The first class we visited was a Fashion class. They gave us an activity to do which involved us being assigned an age range and a current trend and sketching an outfit out. Then we went to a child development class and me and a friend were interested in the class so they gave us some papers to learn more about it. The class had children’s toys and books scattered on the tables. They had fake babies there to show us the difference between a baby born healthy and a baby born addicted to drugs and alcohol. It was a very cool experience. Then we headed to the nursing classroom. We all found it a cool experience but me and my friend were a little more interested than others. The nurses encouraged us to go into the medical assistants room next door, so our group of 5 split and went separate ways. Me and my friend spent over an hour talking to them and asking them questions. They were so encouraging and nice, it made us so excited for our future. After that we had time to visit one more program so we got a tour of an ambulance from the training EMTs. The trip went by so fast and I had so much fun, I wish it could have been longer. If you get the chance to attend this field trip in the future, make sure you do. Even if you aren't planning on attending this school it gives you a good look at what college would be like and what you want to do. It's very beneficial to your future.

We Don't Need a Closed Campus
They're a lot of good things about Victory but one of the things I don't agree with is having is a closed campus. Because not everyone here likes the food that the school provides. And students would rather pay for something they enjoy eating. I don't think its bad to have an open campus where students could go buy food wherever they want. Obviously it's a responsibility to have students be back in time. But the majority of schools are open campus and never have a problem. It also shows that staff trust us enough to be able to go out of school and come back. Gives students freedom, the ability to eat what they want, and not have to starve or eat/purchase something they don't like. Not to mention its high school and we are basically adults. And are responsible enough to leave campus and come back. Having a closed campus just takes freedom and responsibilities away. And the right to eat whatever they wan
What are some plans you have for the school year?
Brandon Benson-Palmares- For winter I want to sell hot chocolate in the multi, for spring time around Easter, I want to sell candy bags and stuff like that.
Why do you deserve their vote?
Not more so I deserve it but i'd like their vote because I’m a hard worker. I'm going to join interact and i’m joining golf, and I'm also applying for psych council, so I am trying my hardest to do the best I can to help out people as well.
What makes you different from the other candidates running?
I’m a really hard worker, i'm always willing to help out anyone, if anyone wanted to come up to me for advice about anything, come up to me. I would love that honestly. To get to know everyone.
What made you want to run for president?
Just to be able to help out and make a difference in the campus and actually do something instead of having an idea and not being able to implement it.
What are some plans you have for the school year?
Zack Saldana- Well I plan to turn this entire campus into a police state, effective immediately, free lunch for kids who need it, and I’d like to take a moment to endorse my running mate and potential president, Brandon.
Why do you deserve their vote?
I don't.
What makes you different from the other candidates running?
I’m actually funny, I don't participate in bad activities, and I actually care about this school.
What made you want to run for president?
I was bored.
What are some plans you have for the school year?
Juan Garcia- I want to have better food.
Why do you deserve their vote?
I'm in ROTC so I know to be a leader, and I have a job and I know how to work in a team and how to communicate with others. I'm a very talkative person, I like to let people be engaged in what the school does.
What makes you different from the other candidates running?
I actually have an extra class at Whitney and that teaches me to be a better person and how to better myself.
What made you want to run for president?
I wanted to be more engaged in this school because to be honest I didn’t want to come to this school but now that I am here it’s not that bad and I want to better what i can do to this school.
Trends
What’s trending for high schoolers right now? In my opinion, high school and the teenagers that attend high schools are very stereotypical. Well, a majority of teenagers. There is nothing wrong with that, I’m just bringing it to your attention. There’s fashion trends, certain TV shows that are trending, and food/drink places. Some of the fashion trends are oversize t-shirts, Birkenstock, scrunchies, wearing super expensive designer clothing (which obviously their parents paid for, and they try to flex like they bought the item of clothing themselves). Some TV shows that are trending right now are Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, The Kardashians, Game of Thrones, and Black Mirror. I’m sure all of you know what Dutch Bros is, and let me tell you… it’s so expensive yet SO good. Dutch always has a bunch of teenagers there hanging out getting drinks, and I’d definitely consider it a trend. Chick-fil-a is also very popular and lots of teens go there for food.
Vaping is the new Cigarette
Tobacco has been around for centuries, the cigarette for several decades, and now the vape less than 15 years. It’s now 2019, we have reported cases of illness all through the globe, but in specific we now have deaths in California, Indiana, Kansans, Minnesota, and Oregon(abc news-vaping). This has become very serious, but what's the catch, why is everyone becoming so sick? The illnesses have been reported in more than 500 related cases in Forty Four states linked to vaping stated by the State Health Departments. Why is this new safer device such an epidemic?
Well it’s viewed as an epidemic because of all the teenagers that now have gained access to these addictive devices. The median age of the illness is 19. 2.1 million students were reported in 2017 to be vaping, and the reports have only gotten higher. Possible components to the high increase would be the flavors that come in all sorts of fruity and sweet smells. It’s been two years since that report was released and now we have cases coming in left and right on the effects, but is any of it really being absorbed? Feedback from high school students has been that they know about the scary facts and harmful effects of cigarettes and tobacco use, but see no true harmful effect of vaping. But do any of them realize they just the guinea pigs to this new scientific studies.
We are just figuring out what MIGHT be causing this illness, the only thing we know is that it’s starting to kill. We’ve had 5 deaths in this year alone, and no clue how someone's life could be affected by the long term use of vaping, This makes the statement that “Vaping is the safer alternative” a straight lie to children and teens.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said there are at least 380 vaping-related respiratory illnesses in 36 states, plus the U.S. Virgin Islands. There may be more cases across the country, but the CDC is counting only those that have been confirmed or are highly probable because all other causes of the lung infection have been ruled out by physicians.” Published in the NBC news.
We are just learning the effects of being big tobacco's guinea pig, and now because so were having teenagers wide and far coming down with illness and very young adults who are now getting their first look at death. Tobacco has been around for 8000 years, cigarettes since the 1800’s, and with that all the known facts lung disease and cancer, ill health, a bad heart, the only difference it takes decades to kill a person off with smoking, it’s only taking years now to give you popcorn lung, you have a fighting chance to stop, still gonna take that next puff?
By Lindsay Pryde
What are some plans you have for the school year?
Samuel Gouveia- I don’t know exactly what the role of president can do to make changes, so I don’t know yet.
Why do you deserve their vote?
I don’t think I deserve the vote, I think Brandon B. deserves it, but once I find out more about the role, I will think of what to do.
What makes you different from the other candidates running?
I have no idea what I am supposed to do as president but I think I have good communication skills and that can help me.
What made you want to run for president?
Resume.
What are some plans you have for the school year?
Anthony Casaray- To make Victory great again.
Why do you deserve their vote?
I deserve the vote so I can make Victory great again.
What makes you different from the other candidates running?
I’ll be the first five foot President at this school.
What made you want to run for president?
Dude. I’m here to make Victory great again.
What are some plans you have for the school year?
Kynan Barrios- Improve the dances, throw better lunch parties, outdoor activities.

I show strong leadership qualities, I’m a firefighter and was in ROTC. I could save your life.
What makes you different from the other candidates running?
I have strong ambitions.
What made you want to run for president?
I love this school and the people.
My Stomach Showing Isn’t a Problem
Every school in society today has some kind of a dress code. Most of the dress codes focus on the female aspect and what they are allowed or not allowed to wear. Millions of girls that go to school everyday probably getting dress coded very frequently. All staff or people who work in schools think that if girls dress a certain way that it will provoke guys or distract them. This is completely sexist because instead of educating guys on how to respect girls, they make girls cover themselves, and have girls not be allowed to wear what they want. Girls and guys should have the right to wear and express themselves the way they want by dressing the way they want. Everyone wears the things they wear because they feel confident and comfortable. So when you dress code someone you’re taking away that confidence that people feel. I got dress coded multiple times for showing my stomach, which should not be a problem. If someone feels comfortable showing their stomach they should have every right to. Last year a freshman named Anna Loisa Cruz at Irvington School in Portland, shared how she got dress coded for wearing a skirt that fell a couple centimeters above her fingertips. She was sent to the office were they made repeated phone calls to her house and was too embarrassed to go back to class. Also another student Hailey Tjensvold added that School dress codes have unknowingly set up double standards, creating a separation in the application of punishment for violating the dress code. “She explained how boys whose trousers sag are simply told to “pull your pants up” without further repercussion while girls are sent to the office and “forced” to call their parents to bring them a change of clothes. Many school dress codes use gendered language, such as “girls must not wear spaghetti straps or show cleavage” because they are a distraction to other students, particularly males. “Dress coding’ students for being a distraction is a form of victim blaming. Males should learn to respect females despite what they are wearing. That's what schools should be teaching. Instead of making females feel embarrassed and uncomfortable.

Secretary with 41% vote= Juan Garcia
Treasurer with 55% vote= Christian Diaz
Vice-President with 48%= Zack Saldana
President with 49%= Brandon Benson Palmares
While interviewing the new ASB leaders President, Vice president, treasure, and lastly, secretary. I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback. Brandon our new found president was super confident in himself while giving his speech. His only wish is to improve the new and old people’s time at the school, letting them have the best experience here at victory. Secondly, Christian our Treasure was kinda scared and had a lot of anxiety about talking in front of everyone but after a while he was fine. His main goal is to manage the money and keep things stable with it. Hopefully have a great field trip for the seniors and maybe a couple barbecues. Last of all Juan our secretary, he was prepared to give his speech. His plans for the school is to help it grow and be fun for everyone. He will contribute by writing his work and keeping organized. The last results ended up with 41% as Secretary. Then 55% of votes as Treasure. Moreover, 48% for the Vice President. Lastly, 49% as president. Overall all the contestants did an amazing job giving speeches and congratulations to the winners.

Are we playing too much?
By Dominic McKibbon
In 1972 Magnavox released the Magnavox Odyssey console. This was the first video game that could be played at home. Between then and now video games have evolved, gotten better, made more fun. Kids from an early age all the way to teenagers will be playing them for hours a day. But this makes us wonder if we spend too much time playing video games? According to a survey by, Center on Media and child health, kids from ages eight to twelve play an average of two hours a day. Kids from ages thirteen to fifteen play two and a half hours. Is this too much? According to Kids Health, video games are starting to interfere with kid’s time to be active. Instead of getting the recommended hour a day of exercise that is recommended for kids six and older, kids are spending that time playing video games. According to Your Teen. Some video games are too violent for young teens to be playing. They say that shooter games can make your child more aggressive, “These are games in which the player is creating at least some of the violence. Playing this role too often or for too long increases the chances that a person will react to conflict with aggression.” It is proven that video games affect the brain. According to Medical News Today “A growing body of evidence, however, shows that video gaming can affect the brain and , furthermore, cause changes in many regions of the brain. Game addicts have functional and structural changes in the neural reward system.... For example, video game use is known to affect attention.” If you play too much video games your attention span will not be as good. Video games are fun, but too much of them is not good for the brain. If you minimize your video game time, you will be able to have fun and be safe.
If You Struggle, Come to Victory
Victory is a good school for people having a hard time with other schools. I really enjoy coming here because it is easy. One thing that I really like about Victory is that the classes are very short, staying in a class for more than an hour really bores me and I just start to zone out after a while and I don’t even learn anything but here the classes are about 45 minutes and I can focus well. Another thing that I like is that it starts late and ends early, I didn’t really like waking up at 6 am just to come to school for 6 to 7 hours and get out at 3. At Victory we start at 8:45 and we get out at 2:08. And last but not least my favorite part, one of the reasons that I failed almost all of my classes at other schools was because I never did my homework and it wasn’t because I didn’t want to, it was because I couldn’t ever focus at home or anything and I failed a lot because of it, but here there is no homework at all and I really like that. Those were some things I like about Victory.

About Victory High School Teachers
What I think about Victory High School is personally, that I think it's such a great school. The most loved people in school is the staff. Not only do they go out of their way to make things easier for you, but they also try their best to make you comprehend what is actually presented . If you don't have an understanding of the material the first time they will explain it as many times as you need until you get it. Not only do they go out of their way to make things easier, but they dedicate themselves to treating others with so much love and support. They truly make you feel like you are family. Which to me is super important, because not a lot of schools give out that emotional and educational support like Victory! Also, another cool thing is that they don't assign any homework! The last thing they want to do is make you feel overwhelmed with work, they just want you to succeed. Victory makes us all feel successful, supported, and loved.
Shania Remine Sep 2019
I’m new to this school but to be honest, the cafeteria food isn’t bad here. My old school had the worst lunches, also victory provides a nutrition period after second period which gives teenagers the ability to eat. Mr. Hutton sells breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and fruit. The menu includes some whole grain and reduced fat with alternatives that have less salt. This school does lack food vendors, because in between classes I know my peers would like to be able to get a quick snack.
Samantha Barkve
On Thursday, September 5, There was a vaping assembly presented by Alexandra Wride. Her profession is a public health educator at Placer County for the Tobacco Control Program. She was at Victory High School to present the students facts about vaping. One thing she said was that the biggest harm about vaping is that kids don’t know everything about it and what’s in it. She was asked why students needed their lungs. Wride stated that lungs are important to preserve and that students needed them for daily life, which would be much harder if the lungs weren’t in a good condition. She was asked what the biggest takeaway should be and she responded with, “Vaping is bad. Youths who use vapes are three times more likely to start smoking.”
We asked some students and staff at VHS for their statements and opinions about the assembly. Anthony Casaray said, “I thought it was pretty funny.” Ms. Mangelsdorf said, “Many of the questions were not answered and I hope students go out and look for the correct answer.” One student who wanted to remain anonymous said, “I thought it was a good presentation, but I felt like she didn’t know anything”.
Overall, even though the assembly and presentation was informative and helped some students, some thought it could’ve went better because a lot of questions went unanswered and some were just completely dodged. We hope that, if some students have questions still, they will go look into those questions before doing anything.

The New Nutrition Break At Victory High!
Mr. Hutton made his decision last year to finally get the nutrition break he wanted for the school. Now everyone can enjoy having some good nutrition and get the nutrients that students need to get through their day. The great thing about having a nutrition break is that people can take a small break and have some breakfast while also being able to use the bathroom, all without having to worry about being late to class. And also kids like to communicate to other students at this time or just check their phones. The teachers could also prep for the next class easily. The teachers and staff could also take a break as well, interacting with the kids or talking to other teachers. Overall the nutrition break is a great addition to VHS and beneficial to all.
