Welcome to the website of Panayiotis (Panos) Papakyriakou, a Lecturer in Finance at the Department of Banking and Finance, University of Southampton Business School.
Panos joined the Department of Banking and Finance in September 2016. He holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Cyprus (2017), an MSc in Computing Science from Imperial College London (2010), an MSc in Operational Research from the London School of Economics and Political Science (2009), and a BSc in Mathematics/Statistics from the University of Cyprus (2008).
Panos’ research spans a broad range of finance areas, including Corporate Finance, Empirical Asset Pricing, Behavioral Finance, and Digital Finance. His research has been published in top-tier journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Risk and Insurance, European Financial Management, European Journal of Finance, Economics Letters, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, and the International Journal of Finance and Economics, among others.
His published work investigates significant financial phenomena such as the impact of underfunded corporate pension plans on firm behavior, sovereign debt rating announcements and market responses, and investor reactions to major shocks like terrorist attacks and financial firm bankruptcies. A particularly notable paper, published in the Journal of Financial Economics, highlights the adverse effects of systematic information leakage prior to official sovereign credit rating announcements.
Panos is also a passionate and experienced educator with more than 10 years of teaching experience at higher education institutions, both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He has taught a wide range of finance modules, with a particular focus on corporate finance. Panos is committed to creating an engaging and interactive learning environment for his students, utilizing clear and concise explanations, enthusiasm for the subject matter, and dedication to helping his students succeed. His passion for teaching has been reflected in his consistently high module evaluation scores, averaging 4.5 out of 5 or better.
