RDA does not define the ranges of vocal types. General practice is to follow the instructions given in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings section H 1917.5: Base vocal range on the verbal indication on the item. If no vocal range is indicated, use the ranges specified in the New Harvard Dictionary of Music:

Berry Song (2022): On an island at the edge of a wide, wild sea, a girl and her grandmother gather gifts from the earth. Salmon from the stream, herring eggs from the ocean, and in the forest, a world of berries. Salmonberry, Cloudberry, Blueberry, Nagoonberry. Huckleberry, Snowberry, Strawberry, Crowberry. Through the seasons, they sing to the land as the land sings to them. Brimming with joy and gratitude, in every step of their journey, they forge a deeper kinship with both the earth and the generations that came before, joining in the song that connects us all. Michaela Goade's luminous rendering of water and forest, berries and jams glows with her love of the land and offers an invitation to readers to deepen their own relationship with the earth".[Little, Brown Books for Young Readers]

Hey Spencer, it sounds like something went wrong in your range test.

This time, press the low notes button, then sing as low as you can for a few seconds.

Then sing the highest note you can hold for a few seconds with the high notes button pressed.

The two basic elements of music that define melody are pitch and rhythm. Melody is a succession of pitches in rhythm. The melody is usually the most memorable aspect of a song, the one the listener remembers and is able to perform.

It is absolutely essential to the craft of songwriting that the writer sing the melody, feel it in the voice, reach for the high notes, and focus on experiencing the relationship between the lyric and the melody. Much of melody writing done for instruments, especially for the piano, is difficult or impossible to sing. The following are to be considered when writing for the voice:

Try to keep such indications to an absolute minimum. The lead sheet should represent the most essential ingredients of the song. These ingredients can then be embellished by the vocalist(s), the accompanist, the arranger, or the producer. Do not clutter the lead sheet with arranging ideas or instrumental sections that are optional.

When actually composing the song, such shortcuts as putting in a repeat sign after four measures in a verse section may discourage creative possibilities and choices that might have existed if you had allowed yourself the space to realize them. (These could be as simple as changing one pitch or rhythm or may entail adding a couple of measures of new music.)

In music, the range, or chromatic range, of a musical instrument is the distance from the lowest to the highest pitch it can play. For a singing voice, the equivalent is vocal range. The range of a musical part is the distance between its lowest and highest note.

The sounding range[3] refers to the pitches produced by an instrument, while the written range[3] refers to the compass (span) of notes written in the sheet music, where the part is sometimes transposed for convenience. A piccolo, for example, typically has a sounding range one octave higher than its written range.[4] The designated range is the set of notes the player should or can achieve while playing. All instruments have a designated range, and all pitched instruments have a playing range. Timbre, dynamics, and duration ranges are interrelated and one may achieve registral range at the expense of timbre. The designated range is thus the range in which a player is expected to have comfortable control of all aspects.

The duration range is the difference between the shortest and longest rhythm used. Dynamic range is the difference between the quietest and loudest volume of an instrument, part or piece of music.

Although woodwind instruments and string instruments have no theoretical upper limit to their range (subject to practical limits), they generally cannot go below their designated range. Brass instruments, on the other hand, can play beyond their designated ranges. Notes lower than the brass instrument's designated range are called pedal tones. The playing range of a brass instrument depends on both the technical limitations of the instrument and the skill of the player.

Classical arrangements seldom make woodwind or brass instruments play beyond their designed range. String musicians play the bottom of their ranges very frequently, but the top of a string instrument's range is rather fuzzy, and it is unusual for a string player to exceed the designated range. It is quite rare for wind musicians to play the extremes of their instruments. The most common exception is that in many 20th century works, pedal tones are called for in bass trombones.

Bruce Hornsby Official Website. Bruce Hornsby\u2019s work displays a creative iconoclasm that\u2019s been a constant in the artist\u2019s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when \u201CThe Way It Is\u201D\u2013the title track of his 1986 debut album\u2013became one of the most popular songs on American radio. Despite his early mainstream successes, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, and Robbie Robertson. Hornsby\u2019s performance will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain.

A big reason for this is the key that songs are recorded in. Depending on the range of notes in the song (how high and how low the notes are) and where those notes fall within your range, the key of a song can make the difference between struggling impossibly and experiencing the thrill of singing.

Make sure you use a vocal version of your song so that you can practice along with the vocal. Once you know the transposed key using the transposed version of the vocal version, you can drag and drop, then transpose the karaoke version and practice with that later.

If you are looking to change the key of the song to make it slightly easier to sing, adjust it either -1 (one half-step lower), -2, -3 (three half-steps lower) or +1 (one half step higher), +2, or +3 (three half steps higher).

If you are looking to change the key of the song from a female range to a male range, adjust it anywhere between -5 (5 half-steps down) to -7 (7 half-steps down). Any higher than 5, and the notes may be too high. Lower than 7, and the range may become too low.

If you are looking to change the key of the song from a male range to a female range, adjust it anywhere between +5 (5 half-steps up) to +9 (9 half-steps up). Any lower than 5, and the notes may be too low.
