Suzanna Hendrix grew up with two artist parents; a mother who was a painter, and a father who was a professional photographer. They taught her to see the beauty in the world and encouraged her to express herself. What they didn't teach her was how to have a healthy relationship. Zanna grew up listening to her parents fight all the time, even after they divorced when she was 12. They technically had joint custody, but after the divorce, Zanna spent most of her time with her dad; her mom largely stopped being involved in her life. 

Although Zanna loved painting, like her mother, she grew up more focused on photography like her dad. She grew up helping him in his studio, learning to set lights and develop film. He was the only real parent she had, and she wanted his approval, so she chose to follow in his footsteps. When applying for college, Zanna chose art schools with good photography programs; she got into her first choice. Her first year of college was amazing.

The summer after changed her life forever. 

She stayed with her dad during the break, and ended up house sitting for him for a week while he traveled for a magazine shoot. While he was gone, the house was broken into, and Zanna was attacked and held hostage while the men ransacked the place. For three days, they asked her where her dad had hidden some bag he was supposedly holding for them, alternating between beating and scaring her in an attempt to get what they wanted. Except Zanna had no clue what they were talking about. They finally found what they were looking for without her help. They didn't want to kill her, but they didn't want to be identified either, so they blinded her. Poured chemicals in her eyes and left her alone in the house. The damage was irreparable by the time she finally got help; she was reduced to dimmed, blurry vision, only able to see vague shapes around her. 

It took roughly a year for her to recover mentally as well as adjust to being blind. When she did, Zanna went back to art school, this time studying painting and sculpture. The world looked very different to her, now, but she still wanted to find the beauty in it.
