Simon had a fascination with animals from the time he was little; never an animal beneath his attention, never an animal too wild to be considered a potential pet in his book. Despite the rough changes that came with the divorce, Simon was thrilled to move into the old Spiderwick Manor, because it meant there were all kinds of new animals he could bring home. In truth, the main reason Simon was interested in learning more about faeries after Jared discovered the fieldguide was that it opened a whole new world of animals to him; case in point was the griffin he adopted, Byron. 

As they grew up and learned more about Faerie, Simon became something of a magizoologist, while Jared became the expert on all things fae. When it came time to go to college, it surprised no one that Simon went to veterinary school. He's done his undergrad work, and now is working on becoming a proper doctor. His goal is to one day open his own clinic where he treats both standard pets and more magical animals.
