Virginia very very good match Brian Kendrick & Paul London vs. Dave Taylor & William Regal vs. Jeff Hardy & Matt Hardy vs. Joey Mercury & Johnny Nitro 17.12.2006
Vermont is for lovers. But when I was putting this road trip together Virginia was a state where I didn't have a match I loved. So i asked around what peoples favourite Virginia match is and friend of the blog Marilyn from Marilyn of Death suggested this match.
This road trip has avoided talking about the WWE up until now but unfortunately despite its best efforts WWE have produced great matches, matches that can even be a states best, taking place in the Richmond coliseum former home of the ABA team Virginia Squires were the famous Dr. J used to play. Richmond itself has a troubled history being built on stolen native land and once holding the largest arms factories and slave factories of the confederacy. But it is also the birthplace of Vince Gilligan and D'Angelo so you take the good with the very very bad.
To cut to the point, Joey Mercury's nose explodes in this match. Matt Hardy holds both members of MNM over a ladder that's balanced like a seesaw and Jeff jumps on the other side sending it high speed into both members face but only Joey gets a broken nose. We only get a few seconds to see how badly he's been busted open before he's taken out of the match to get some help. The term posterized in a basketball context comes from how people use to describe Dr, J slam dunks, and tonight the spirit of the Virginia squires lives on because there's no better way to describe it. Joey Mercury's nose got absolutely posterized. This was sick, dangerous and fucking ruled.
The rest of a ladder match while containing some good stuff doesn't come close to this one moment. Part of the reason for that is that while I'm sure this was crazy stuff for the time the plunder I've seen in ladder matches since lead to a lot of this just sort of flowing over me. It's not to say i don't get nothing out seeing the Hardys, London and Kendrick do their things, there's fun spots and clean action but I'm sure id get more form that if i was watching it in 2006. My favourite stuff besides the nose explosion is the character work from Regal and Taylor, Two middle aged British men who were promised a simple tag match against the champ very unprepared to be in a match like this. Best showcase in Regal, one of the few men who find ways to be actually funny in the WWE, being scared to climb the ladder.
London and Kendrick eventually win the match, resting their championship. This match dose leave you wanting to see the Hardys challenge the champs and see what the four men can come up with but such a match never came.
A very fun ladder match with one truly sick moment in there
