Massachusetts magnum opus El Generico & Kevin Steen vs. Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe 10.08.2007
This match is wicked departed yo.
We’ve left the great state of new york and because this trip was planned by an idiot who's never been to america we pass through colorado to arrive at boston Massachusetts. The location of the greatest freakin basketball team on earth, the freakin boston celtics. To be specific at the Roxbury Community College a college known to have a mostly POC student base with notable alumni, writer Marita Golden who founded the Hurston/Wright Foundation which gives resources to african-american writers. which is why it makes for a perfect place to talk about a match involving four white guys.
I swear this series will not be dominated by ROH but while we're in New England it's an unfortunate reality. Tonight it's the 10th of august 2007 for death before dishonour five, and we've got ourselves non–sanctioned Boston street fight. Freakin wicked yo
We once again find ourselves focusing on a match that is the main event of a ROH show with a bout that is in the embers of the briscors vs steenrico feud. With two bouts before this feud has been deemed too violent for ROH to have the Briscoes defend their tag titles.
The two Quebecers come out to “Olé, Olé, Olé” and are received like there Ray Bourque but there is no tag team on the earth that this crowd would love more than the Briscoes. The match takes no time to get started, the Briscoes don't even get to finish their entrance before all four men are brawling.
To add to the heightened sense of danger the commentators Dave Prazak and Lenny Leonard decide this match is too dangerous for them to call and leave.
The first ten minutes of this match are as close to perfect as wrestling comes. Steen pairs off with Jay and El Generico with Mark and they beat the shit out of each other. The camera cuts between the two pairings and every time they are in a new place doing something insane to each other, chair shots to the head, steens in a bin, Generico gone through a table. Often in wrestling we see wrestlers play to the cameras, even if not as strict as WWE’s work the hardcam rule it makes sense for wrestlers to act in a way the camera can follow. Not here, they are not wrestling for the cameras, they are not even wrestling for the fans, they are doing this for the sake of it. This combined with the energetic crowd creates an atmosphere of real animosity and intensity for this match. Good wrestling often feels like it has a rhythm to it. I get this feeling most often when watching lucha but this match has got it too. A constant intense rhythm of violence.
This is not to say this part of the match lacks any structure. Steenrico very clearly takes some early control, beating down on the briscoes like it's the patriots playing the jets. The Briscoes then mount a simultaneous comeback to the delight of the crowd.
The match eventually makes its way to the ring and it is not that the match gets bad, far from it we continue to incredible moments such as Steen’s attempted beheading of Mark and Generico going through the barrier. However problems start to show themselves, issues that will go on to plague Steen's and Generico’s career especially when they face each other. The selling in this part of the match is lacking, guys take a chairshot to the head and get up five seconds later. It starts to feel like they're going from planned spot to planned spot, not having the natural flow the crowd brawl did. The match's worst sin is trying to be too big, a million kicks out or the pinfall gets broken up. Im reminded of my problems I have with Steen and Generico fight without honour against each other,
While I have my complaints this match is still terrific, the best Massachusetts has to offer. Its wicked
