We appreciate your interest in enrolling your son or daughter in Scouting. Below you will find the list of commitments that are required from you as the parent of a cub scout. Please go through them carefully and let us know if you have any questions.
Our scouting year runs along with the school year, Aug to June. We will have an information session at the end of August to answer any of your questions. Please see the calendar section of our site for more details. Summer camps are available to scouts as well and if you are a registered scout you can join the fun in the summer too!
In terms of commitment:
The pack (@40 scouts/families) meets nearly every month for @ 90 mins at Ortega Park or other parks around Sunnyvale.
The den (small group of 6-9) your scout will be in, typically meets two times a month for about 60 mins (parent participation is required for at least one adventure~2 mtg). Currently meetings are being held online.
Yearly registration fee is $175 ($110 towards BSA online registration and $65 for the pack). When you complete your scouts online registration at my.scouting.org there is a one time fee of $25. This covers your scout for next 12 months. The pack fees go toward running the pack and also pays for their BSA fees for the next full calendar year. Being registered with the BSA provides insurance for your scout and allows them to complete advancement requirements and earn their rank badges that is tracked on a site called Scout Book.
We encourage purchasing a scout uniform, official pants are optional for our pack. We also have hand-me-down events when uniforms can be acquired from scouts that have outgrown them. The uniform provides a sense of belonging to a group (like Karate).
ALL parents are encouraged to complete YPT (youth protection training) on my.scouting.org. If you are a leader it is mandatory.
Volunteering: There are many activities planned for the year and all of the leaders are volunteers who themselves have cub scouts in the pack. To make sure the scouts have a year full of fun activities, our pack’s policy is that ALL parents take a role in the pack or take on a leadership position at the den or pack level. The volunteer roster is read only and is located here. **When we are able to meet in person again we will be asking for more volunteers. We do ask for all parents to help run den meetings. This a rewarding experience and an opportunity for scouts to see parents function as a leader or an "akela". Materials are available to do this, so no need to worry!
Complete Online Registration through Beascout.org and complete an application for either and adult or youth.
Youth Protection Training (YPT), an online training that we ask all parents to complete. It is mandatory for all leaders to complete. This is located at my.scouting.org.
Complete Pack Registration (pack fee and choose volunteer choice), please fill out the google form on the 2nd tab of our site " sign in/interest in pack 457"
Once we receive your registration, fees, and volunteer choice then we can enter you into our tracker system, Scout Book. PLEASE accept the invite to connect to your scout.
In Scout Book you can see the calendar of activities. and update your scouts advancement and send messages to your den.
We also use Slack to communicate pack and den activities.
When we have assembled all of our new scouts then our Cub Masters will assign the scouts into their dens. This typically happens in September. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
