Pacific Rim: The Black[c] is a Japanese-American[1][2][3][4] adult animated[5] streaming television series based on and a continuation of the Pacific Rim films. Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 ending offers the stories of Taylor and Hayley some much-needed resolutions. Picking up right where season 1 left, Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 continues the journeys of Taylor and Hayley while brother and sister try to find the truth about their parents. The fate of Brina and Ford Travis turned out to be only one of the mysteries Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 dealt with, as a lot about the Sisters of the Kaiju, the Boy, and Mei was uncovered.

Very much like season 1, Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 is vague as to where the show is set in the Pacific Rim timeline. That said, from the latter half of season 1 to the end of season 2, only a few days have passed. While The Black season 2 adds a lot of elements to the Pacific Rim canon, the focus of the show continues to be on the story of Hayley and Taylor.

Although originally introduced in the Pacific Rim: Aftermath comics, it is now in Pacific Rim: The Black that the Sisters of the Kaiju are being developed. Previously mentioned at the beginning of the series and teased at the end of season 1, the Sisters of the Kaiju were Pacific Rim: The Black's season 2 main villains. The Sisters were an all-female cult that worshiped the Kaijus and believed the monsters were divine beings. Most of the members joined after being abducted and brainwashed, and that was the case for Taylor and Hayley's mother. Part of the Sisters' worship rituals involved the genetic material of the Kaijus, which explains why they were buying the eggs from Shane in season 1. Led by the High Priestess, the Sisters of the Kaiju wanted to capture the Boy because they believed him to be the Kaiju Messiah. Fortunately, the Boy managed to be saved before the ritual was complete, and the High Priestess was destroyed.

Pacific Rim: The Black's biggest mystery was who or what the Boy was. After the shocking reveal in season 1 that the Boy could transform into a small-sized Kaiju, Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 establishes that he was actually a kaiju-human hybrid most likely designed by the Precursors to look like a human. That said, the show did not go into detail about where the Boy came from or how long ago he was created. The only thing that the Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 ending reveals on that matter is that the army had found the Boy lost in the desert and then took him to be studied. This is why the Boy was trapped inside a lab when Hayley found him in season 1. The show also did not go into detail about the prophecy that the Sisters believed involved the Boy, but he was clearly special to both humans and other Kaiju. Now in Sydney with Taylor and Hayley, Pacific Rim: The Black's Kaiju Boy can finally have a normal life.

Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 offered Shane, the show's most controversial character, a chance to redeem himself. After the reveal that Shane had pretty much abducted Mei from her family and stolen her memories, the Bogan faction leader became the typical repulsive human villain of a post-apocalyptic story. However, while trying to break Brina's mind out of the Sisters of the Kaiju's control to gain the Atlas Destroyer in return, Shane had to decide between saving himself or Taylor and Hayley's mother. In a surprising decision, Shane let his mind be completely destroyed by the Priestess's influence so that Brina could return to her children. The Netflix animated show does not excuse Shane's previous actions, but the character had a chance to make up at least for the things he had done against Taylor and Hayley.

Unfortunately, there will not be a Pacific Rim: The Black season 3. Netflix had only ordered two seasons of the show, and the official Pacific Rim Twitter account is referring to season 2 as being Pacific Rim: The Black's final season. While this may disappoint fans of the franchise, especially considering that Pacific Rim 3 still has not happened, it is at least comforting to know that Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 managed to conclude most of the storylines and did not leave too many loose ends - the only exception being the mystery regarding the creation of the Boy. Had Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 ended on a cliffhanger as season 1 did, then the show not returning for season 3 would have been a real disappointment.

Pacific Rim: The Black season 1 blew me away. It was exciting, warm and suspenseful. It also had a load of heart and great characters. More importantly it had giant mechs punching Kaiju in their faces! So I was very excited when a mate incorrectly told me the season was on already only to find out he was mistaken, it was out the following week. Every hour was a dagger in my mind waiting. Every second was pain beyond compare. And finally, it arrived. I flopped the husk I had become down in front of Netflix, and was ready.

Okay, calm down. Breath. On the plus side in this season there are some awesome battles. Once again, not in every episode, but enough to make the show exciting. The story is a little hit and miss though, with some really dumb bits (a Kaiju whisperer, u wot m8?) They also bring back some awesome characters who really should have been given way more story time.

As usual, the look is awesome. I love the cartoon/CGI stuff and the battles, as mentioned, are brilliant. It certainly picks up towards the end of the 7-episode season, which makes a lot of the stupid character moments worth it.

When season 1 ended with the reveal of the Sisters of the Kaiju and their belief that Boy is some form of Kaiju Messiah, I suspected that season 2 was going to head into some new waters for the Pacific Rim franchise. And boy does it. Mind control, blood rituals, telepathy, and metahuman physical abilities are all on the docket when the Sisters come for Boy.

Given the stop-and-go nature of the franchise in the past, it's only natural for people to wonder if season 2 is in the cards before getting invested in another epic anime adventure. For anyone who liked what they saw on the Netflix series the first time around, there's very good news for the future.

From Blood of Zeus to High-Rise Invasion, Netflix has made a concerted effort as of late to create high-quality original anime series for subscribers around the globe to enjoy. It doesn't seem like the plan is to crank out a bunch of programming willy-nilly, either, as Netflix has thrown down the gauntlet numerous times before to invest in these series, which can readily be seen with Pacific Rim: The Black. Back in 2019, before season 1 even aired, Elie Dekel, who works on behalf of Legendary Entertainment, announced that Netflix had already picked up the show for two seasons (via IGN).

For now, Pacific Rim fans can rest easy knowing that they should receive more answers to all of the burning questions that were left up in the air at the end of The Black season 1. What's the true extent of Boy's powers? What's Shane's next plan in tracking down Mei? Who are those hooded women who appear at the end of season 1? No release date for Pacific Rim: The Black season 2 has been announced yet, but it'll all be worth it over time.

Pacific Rim: The Black has released its season 2 trailer, and it promises a bold new chapter for the franchise. All the trademark colorful jaegers and kaijus are present, but also a mysterious underground cult threatens our heroes.

Pacific Rim: The Black debuted in 2021, with fans of the franchise embracing its darker tone, especially after the vapid nonsense that was Pacific Rim: Uprising. It was likely that film would've killed the series, but thankfully Netflix gave Pacific Rim another chance. However, this will be the final season of The Black, due to Netflix's habit of keeping most shows on very brief runs.
