Our Yoga Retreat Venue Lamu Island:

Fatuma’s Tower on Lamu Island comprises of four buildings, the main building Fatumas Tower itself, the Sand Castle, the Garden Cottage and the enchanted Baobab Cottage. All these are situated within one compound with lovely gardens and secluded behind high coral walls. You immediately experience peace, the moment you pass through the shaded front entrance. Each house boasts its own character with unique Swahili architecture.

It is a labyrinthine building within which you feel you have escaped the busy outside world. The outstanding third floor spacious roof top Acacia suite with large bathroom has steps up to a covered verandah and open sun deck with views across to palm trees on the neighbouring island of Manda. The magnificent acacia tree it is named after, fills all the windows of one side.

Vegan Meals

During the Afrikan Yoga Teacher Training and Retreat we will eat the best fruits and vegetables the island has to offer. With our staples being Swahili sweet potatoes and cassava, accompanied with fresh vegetables cooked in just-picked coconut milk! or raw vitamin packed salads with tropical fruits, which should supply the right energy for our intensive yoga! Most of the produce comes from the neighbouring mainland Lamu and Tana Counties. We will be drinking fresh coconuts, Tamarind, Mango, passion and orange juice every day and eat a balanced vegan diet, with focus on alkaline foods, smoothies and juices but we will also taste the vegan Swahili Soul Food options like Samosa, Bhajia, Chapati and spiced coconut rice.

About Lamu Island

Lamu is a small historic town on Lamu Island, which in turn is part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya northeast of Mombasa or reachable by a 2hr inland flight from Nairobi, landing on Manda airport, only separated by a channel from Lamu Island you enter an ancient enclave on the Indian Ocean onto Shela Village, where Fatuma’s Tower is situated, our home for the training and retreat, lies on the tip of Lamu islands crescent moon shape. Lamu is situated in a hot and dry climate, a World Heritage Site where life still retains the pace of traditional Swahili culture. Life here revolves around the sea. Lamu was an established trading port as long ago as the 10th Century and fishing, trading and seafaring remains its principal activity to this day, besides tourism. Swahili architecture with its' richly decorated wooden door carvings, hint at the island's affluent past. Shela marks the start of a stunning 14km long white sand beach that marks the iconic half-moon shape of the island.

Motor vehicles are still not allowed on the island, which maintains the islands peace and tranquillity and evokes memories of a slower and simpler pace of life. This is a place where you will most want to revisit.
