The P90X workout is a rigorous 90-day program designed by Tony Horton that requires you to exercise six days per week. The program includes strength training, cardio, plyometrics, stretching, and of course, yoga. Aside from the series of DVDs, the set includes a fitness plan, a nutrition guide, a fitness test, and a calendar. The DVDs have different workouts that range from mild levels of intensity, to high levels of very insane and intense workouts.

Although P90X is intense and time-consuming, it is also a lot of fun. For people who love yoga, there was a part of the original P90X that included it. The Beachbody workouts eventually spawned P90X Yoga (aka Yoga X) because of how much it made people sweat and helped them get lean. Here is an in-depth look at this latest mash-up between an intense and a calming workout, along with what you should expect should you ever decide to give it a go.

This was not something that I enjoyed because the Yoga Belly 7 mainly focused on the lower abs instead of developing the upper abs and the obliques along with it. Additionally, Tony forgets about the calmness and peace of a yoga class and ends up reverting back to his normal way of yelling at folks to push them harder. The whole meditative ambiance of yoga disappeared during this section.

However, we should thank Tony for P90X since he effectively exposes many new people to yoga through this program. It would be more ideal if someone would have his or her very first yoga experience in a yoga studio instead of in front of the TV at home. However, this exposure to yoga is better than nothing. If you do end up loving P90X Yoga, then go ahead and find a studio nearby and practice more yoga.

Tony Horton, celebrity personal trainer and creator of P90X, claims his physical success isn't just from lifting weights, but that yoga has played an important role in keeping him young and active. Yoga X combines a strong, flowing yoga with holding poses for several breaths. Horton mentions both Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga, but he also combines holding poses, which is indicative of what you may find in a Hatha yoga class.

After several days of heart-pumping videos working the arms and legs, and aerobic exercises such as plyometrics, Yoga X is a welcoming sigh of relief for many. But be prepared to work. This yoga routine is designed to both stretch and strengthen your muscles. In Yoga X, you start with some breathing and a gentle warm up, which includes a few rounds of Cat/Cow. After your body is warmed up, Horton puts you through a few rounds of Sun Salutations with variations taking you into standing poses such as Warrior and Triangle poses. Your workout continues with holding several balancing poses, a cool down and, finally, corpse pose.

Traditionally, there are six branches of yoga, which include meditation, breathing and other philosophical disciplines. One of those branches is Hatha yoga, which is the physical practice of yoga. All the yoga postures practiced today stem from Hatha yoga. In Yoga X Horton states the style is Ahstanga and Vinyasa, but it is important to note both styles stem from Hatha yoga. Similarly, the later portion of the DVD, Horton has participants hold balancing postures, which is traditional to many Hatha yoga classes.

In Ashtanga yoga each flowing sequence, which link a series of poses together, is called a vinyasa. Vinyasa yoga developed as an off-shoot of Ashtanga yoga. Teachers of Vinyasa yoga are not limited to the same methodology and rules as in Ashtanga. Teachers can bring creativity and variety to their yoga classes. In Yoga X, Horton explores the creative traditions of Vinyasa yoga, rather than following the Ashtanga yoga system. Horton provides a strong and sweaty vinyasa for participants of P90X.

I don't think it's coincidental that the second generation of P90X (P90X2) has a far easier yoga workout that clocks in at 66 minutes. I'm just starting Week 9 of P90X2, and I'll have no problem finishing. That's partly because the yoga is not nearly as torturous and also because I've finally set my ego aside and taken Horton's well-worn advice to heart: "Do your best and forget the rest."

Finally there are plenty of online resources from YouTube to apps that teach yoga with varying costs, lengths and abilities. These free resources are a great way to get some yoga moves into your P90x routine without spending any more money.

I was a little doubtful to do this. I want to get back in running shape and therefore woke up feeling like I should be running instead of doing yoga. Now that I have completed this workout I can see some really great benefits.

Variety. Doing some yoga will keep me from burning out on running too early. My plan is to start full out training come March. If I stick to one or two runs a week now I will be fine. If I try to push it to more, then I will be tired of running come race season.

hey dude ive done a lot of this workouts (insanity, insanity max:30, t25 al three phases, p90x1 and 2, tapout xt (i hated it) im in a pretty good shape and i was thinking, how about a remix calendar with all of them. what would you suggest? great blog by the way.

"I know inclusion of yoga in military training sounds a tad alien," Tony Horton, 52, acknowledged as he presented his techniques to a group of 200 people, many clad in gymwear, at the National Press Club in Washington.
