About
Dr. Prakash Kumar received B. Sc degree from University of Calcutta in Physics and M.Sc (Tech) degree from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. Dr. Kumar obtained his PhD degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad in seismic. He is the recipient of various awards and recognizations such as CSIR-Young scientist award, Krishnan Gold medal from Indian Geophysical Union, National Geoscience Award, Anni Talwani Memorial Prize – Indian Geophysical Union, DAAD and JSPS Fellowships. He was the visiting researcher at GeoFoschungsZentrum, Germany and Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo,Japan. He is currently working as a scientist in Seismological Division in CSIR-NGRI. Dr. Kumar's research areas include both active and passive seismology. His interest comprises of theoretical and computational seismology - Converted wave techniques, Anisotropy, Seismological Tools to explore deep earth and attempting forefront problems in seismology and Earthquake source dynamics. His most notable work is the mapping of the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary using converted waves (P- and S-receiver functions) in diverse geodynamical regimes of the world. His seminal contribution is the estimation of thickness of plates of various Gondwana fragments and ocean Islands. He extensively worked on the seismological data from western to eastern Himalaya and Tibet. He also used data from borehole broad band ocean bottom observatories (Pacific and Philippine Sea plates). His another notable work is the mapping of the oceanic plates using the land based stations and suggested the seismic evidence for sharp oceanic plate which grows with age favouring predominantly thermal evolution of oceanic lithopshere. Dr. Kumar published 65 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored 1 Book.
