ORIGINAL SERIGRAPHS

A Serigraph is an extremely complex work of fine art. It should not be confused with a simple silk-screen print. Each piece is original and done by hand by the artist. It requires technical and engineering dexterity as well as artistic talent.

Serigraphy is a color stencil printmaking process in which special paint is forced through a fine screen onto the print beneath. Areas which do not print are blocked in each of the stencil screens. A sheet of high quality, archival paper is first inserted under the screen and special paint poured along the edge. A squeegee is then pulled from back to front, producing a direct transfer of the image from screen to paper. A separate stencil is required for each color in each serigraph. For subtle gradations in color - the Artist will use 30 to 40 hues of each of those colors - this requires a like number of pulls on his screen. A complex finished Serigraph image can contain well over 100 pulls!

Ginger Osgood and R. Freeman Worthley were both masters of this process and two of only a very few artists in the world who created their Serigraphs completely by hand.

ORIGINAL COLLAGRAPHS

An Intaglio Collagraph is an original hand made print pulled from a plate that was constructed by gluing textured materials to a hard surface. The materials create various lines, textures and tones when hand colored and hand wiped. The plate is colored by forcing the pigment into the textured recesses in the plate and hand wiping the raised areas. The print is made by passing the colored plate and rag paper through an etching press. Pressure from the press forces the rag paper into the recessed areas of the plate and when the paper is removed the pigment is transferred to the paper. Each Embossed Collagraph is an original print because it is totally hand made by the artist. Once Ginger Osgood pulled an embossing, she would work the acrylics on the surface of the print like watercolors, flowing ... producing beautiful combinations of colors.

ORIGINAL ETCHINGS

At a time when etchings and engravings were thought of as small prints to be used either in book form or on the wall; The Worthleys, always on the cutting-edge and ahead of their time thought of them in a much more expansive way to be used and enjoyed as large prints, pairs or series of large prints and even murals. An original Etching is a print that is hand pulled from a metal plate (copper or zinc) where the line has been bitten into the plate with acid which selectively corrodes & eats into the metal. It is done by coating the plate with an acid-resistant film (Hard Ground). Into this ground an image is drawn with a needle so that the metal is exposed underneath. The plate is then immersed in a bath of acid which erodes the exposed metal. When the desired depth has been obtained the ground is cleaned off so that the prints can be taken from the plate. When the print is dry it may be Hand-Colored. Watercolor is applied to the image to bring out the design. This is done in much the same fashion as one would do a watercolor painting.
