Various resources are available in the Out There universe. Most resources are elements, but there are also several other specialized items, such as Omega, Cocoons, Emissaries, and Humans.

Destroyed Equipment: At depths of 7-10 km, the active equipment can be destroyed: it is completely removed from the slot, and the element(s) yielded by dismantling the equipment are added to the ship inventory (if storage space is available). In addition, there is a ~10% chance that the storage slot occupied by the equipment is damaged: nothing can be placed in that location until the slot is repaired, using the ship-specific repair element. The message is different when probing or drilling, but the message does not specify whether a storage slot was also damaged.

If the player is about to die (e.g., the ship runs out of fuel or oxygen, or the ship's hull is destroyed) and there is a cocoon in storage on the ship, the cocoon transforms into a Flea, preventing the player from dying. Cocoons are used after last chances (e.g., after a "Desperate Action" warning is ignored), but before Stellar Embryos. All contents of the original ship (resources and modules) are irretrievably lost (the original ship is not even added to the graveyard ships). The usefulness of cocoons as a safety net decreases as the game progresses: the Flea may not be able to jump to another star system as the spacing between the stars increases, leaving you stranded and unable to reach any other ship.

Multiple cocoons can be collected (stacking up to 20 in one storage slot), for example by placing each cocoon on an abandoned ship after it is found. However, there is no advantage to owning more than one cocoon (nor do cocoons provide any benefit when stored on abandoned ships).

The only relevance of Humans for gameplay is when completing the Yellow Objective. At least 1 human is necessary to complete the Yellow Objective, and there is a score bonus of 999 points per human. Even when pursuing the Yellow Objective, however, there is no need to keep the humans on your current ship while exploring. Instead, it is easier to store them on an abandoned ship; they can be left in storage on any type of ship (not just Ark ships), even if the ship contains no Cryonics module.

However, Omega is not all-powerful. In particular, it can not be used to build new modules (and therefore can not help if a random encounter completely destroys a module). It also cannot repair damaged storage slots.

Initially this makes Out There seem very overwhelming and even tedious. It's true that the game involves a lot of menu sifting, basic math processing to calculate how much fuel it will take to get to a planet and just straight up praying that the next destination will contain what you need to survive. 15 minutes into Out There that overwhelming sense of panic dissolves and it's obvious that the game is actually quite streamlined. It's simple but smart. All resources and their functions are clearly marked and while there is strategy involved in exploring the unknown universe it is never so complex that it makes playing Out There feel like a part time job. There's something strangely addicting and satisfying about stockpiling resources and planning flights from planet to planet ahead of time.

If you've been searching high and low for a Swatch MoonSwatch, you might be in luck. Thanks to some in-depth research (calling nearly every MoonSwatch stockist in America) from GQ's watch guru, Cam Wolf, you can finally (probably) find the coveted limited edition watch in select retail stores right now. Despite its high demand, the MoonSwatch timepiece is still stocked in a few places. Currently, there are 16 stores in America, including 4 in New York City, that are sitting on product. The quantity may be low, but if you've been aiming to upgrade your wristwear, the time is now!

If you don't live in any of the select cities that stock MoonSwatches, you can still shop previous models of the limited-edition timepiece now on eBay, StockX, or Chrono24.

There is a first stop on the crown, which at first seems to control nothing, as there is no date, however, there is still a function. With the crown in first position, pressing the top pusher adjusts the the 1/10 sec-hand, and the bottom pusher the center chrono-seconds hand, should they get out of place. Similarly, with the crown in second position, the top pusher will adjust the 60-minute hand.

With a full grade 2 titanium case and bracelet (and that aluminum bezel), the first thought I had in person was how light the new Bond Seamaster feels. The bracelet is very high quality, with a fold-over clasp that has a pin to set the bracelet size in place with a secured clasp of its own. Once closed, there is a secure push-button clasp to keep everything in place. I love a mesh bracelet and this is easily the finest I've ever had on my wrist, with tight Milanese-style links that interlock with none of the vague wabi-sabi common to a cheaper "shark mesh" style bracelet. The high-quality feel is a lovely match for the titanium construction and, paired with the case of the Seamaster, it feels amazing. I used to wear my 2254.50 on a cheap mesh bracelet, and this offers a similar charm but the execution is miles better. For those that somehow don't dig the titanium mesh, there is also a version of the watch sold on a NATO.

Omega World appeared in the September/October issue of Dungeon94/Polyhedron 153 and is easily the best mini-game published there todate. It's an amazing feat of minimalist design, packing in everythingnecessary in a minimum of pages (43). It's the most impressive d20 gameI have yet seen, including D&D. Only Midnight comes close for me.

Alright, so let's create a character. What different races are there?Well, as anyone who knows Gamma World would know, there are pure-strainhumans and mutants. Pure-strain humans are the stock humans from d20and get those benefits, plus since they are adept with technology, theyget Tech skills as class skills. The mutants come in multiple kinds:human stock, hairy, clicky, and scaly. Human stock mutants don't getthe usual human benefits, have an ECL of +1, and get mutations. Hairymutants are humanoid mutants descended from some kind of mammal, likedogs or moose. Clicky mutants are humanoid arthropods, mainly beetles.Scaly mutants are humanoid reptiles. The more far out mutants haveECL's of +2, some default mutations, and are dumber but more physicallycapable than others.

The character generation suggested is random generation, so you roll onvarious tables. I decided to create a mutant, so I rolled on the tableand got a clicky mutant. Once you decide on the mutant, you roll formutations. You can roll as often as you want on positive mutations, each of which has a specific value, and then you have to roll until youhave just as many values of defects (negative mutations). I think anexample is in order here. I decided to roll three times for my clickyand got Dual Brain (which provides bonuses to mental scores and two Willsaves to resist something, value 2), Rage (barbarian rage, value 4), andPsychic Healing (cure 2d6 at a time, value 4). So that's 10 points ofmutations, so I need at least 10 points of defects. I end up rollingthree times here as well and get Terrible Will (-10 to Will savingthrows, value 3), Slow (-5 ft speed, value 2), and Crude Hands (-4 toattack roles with weapons and skill checks requiring dexterity, value10). Beyond the ridiculousness of this (a dual brain weak-willed beetlemutant), I have to admit to a certain fondness for the amazing (in allsenses) juxtaposition evident from random character generation. In theend, "Clicky" has 10 points of mutations and 15 points of defects. Thiskind of thing should happen fairly frequently, since there are fewerdefects and they go up in cost very quickly. No mutation is worth morethan 8 points, but the worst Defect is No Arms, worth 20 points. Thisseems to be a reflection of the wild and woolly side of the game. Itwould be fairly easy however, to change the defects to make them worthless points or require defects and mutations to balance out, so thingsaren't quite as ridiculous. The framework is strong enough to allow oneto make the game a little more serious without much work. (Thisflexibility is evident everywhere in the design of Omega World.)Another way to get around this is to pick mutations, but of course noone we know would ever do that. ff782bc1db
