Catholic Church
Delta Junction, Alaska
Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church moved to its present site in Delta Junction, Alaska in the middle of the '60s. Through the joint efforts of a team of military and civilian volunteers, the current church was constructed out of a surplus barracks building donated by Eielson AFB and relocated to Delta Junction. At the current site, ambitious volunteers wielding hammers, saws, planes, and paintbrushes transformed a two-story barracks into a church.
The transformed barracks served OLS parish until the middle '80s when parish members began to recognize the need for a larger church. Again volunteers came forward with saws, hammers, and construction expertise. After 4 years of concerted effort, our dream was of a corridor connecting the new with the old had become a reality.
Today, Our Lady of Sorrows Church is too small to accommodate everyone, and a new church is in the planning stages.
