Design Research is going through a phase of digital transformation: in our research, we increasingly rely on data collected from remote contexts, engage in data-enabled (co-)design, and work with data-intensive tools and methods. Data Foundry was developed in the last 2-3 years to build a basis for such practices at the department level, to allow students and researchers to easily collect data from a variety of sources for analysis, visualization, sharing, and prototyping with data. I will talk about our progress so far in facilitating the digital transformation and outline our future plans. This is a talk and not a talk only; I want a conversation with you and understand your views on open data and open science in design research and beyond.
Dr Mathias Funk is an Associate Professor in the Future Everyday group in the Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology. He has a background in Computer Science and a PhD in Electrical Engineering. His research interests include complex systems design, remote data collection, systems for musical expression, and design tools such as domain-specific languages and integrated development environments. In the past, he has worked at the Advanced Telecommunications Laboratory (ATR) in Japan, at RWTH Aachen, at Philips Consumer Lifestyle and at Intel Labs, Santa Clara. He is the co-founder of UXsuite, Cologne and co-authored a book on creative coding in 2021.
