The 318 Fathers of The Holy First Ecumenical Council
and the first 10 digits of π
This is a simple example of how the Church has discerned certain numbers in the context of the Faith as having mystagogical / theological significance.
The 318 Fathers of The First Holy Ecumenical Council (Nicaea 1, 325 AD.) which was convened by +Saint Konstantinos the Great, Equal to The Apostles.
π = 3.14 159 .. (first 6 digits of π)
The first 3 digits of π = 3.14 can be obtained by taking the reciprocal of .318
1 / .318 = 3.14.. (first 3 digits of π)
By dividing 318 by 2 we obtain the next 3 digits of π:
318 / 2 = 159
The value of π (to one digit) is found in the Holy Old Testament Scriptures relating to King Solomon and the Old Testament Temple.
'23 And he made a molten sea, *ten cubits* from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of *thirty cubits* did compass it round about' - 1 Kings 7
By dividing the circumference by the diameter we obtain:
Thirty cubits circumference / Ten cubits diameter = 3 ≈ π (to one digit)
The number 318 corresponds to the first 10 digits of π as follows:
π = 3.14 1592 653 (first 10 digits of π)
A. 1 / 3.14 = .318 .. (first 3 digits of π)
[3.14] 1592653
B. 159 x 2 = 318 (next 4 digits of π)
3.14 [159 2] 653
C. 6 x 53 = 318 (next 3 digits of π)
3.141592 [6 53]
The first 12 digits of π yield the Church Calendar via its factors 14 and 38:
π = 3.1415 9265358 ..
(3+1+4+1+5) × (9+2+6+5+3+5+8) = 14 × 38 =
532 (Church Calendar Cycle)
The first 10 digits of e also yield the Church Calendar via the same factors 14 and 38:
e = 2.7 1828 1828 ..
(2 × 7) × (1+8+2+8 + 1+8+2+8) = 14 × 38 =
532 (Church Calendar Cycle)
The Church recognizes as mystically significant that the number 318 corresponds to the 318 servants of Abraham (Genesis 14:14) who delivered the household of Lot from captivity thus typologizing the 318 Bishops (Servants of God) who delivered the Flock (the household of God) from the captivity of arianism. The First and Second Holy Ecumenical Councils also composed the Symbol of Faith (Nicene Konstantinopolitan Creed).
The Orthodox Church Calendar was defined by the God-inspired Fathers of The First Holy Ecumenical Council (Nicaea 325 AD). The defeat of heresies (symbolized by arianism), the Orthodox Confession of Faith, and the Church Calendar are all thus mystically and inviolably held together.
'μὴ μέταιρε ὅρια αἰώνια, ἃ ἔθεντο οἱ πατέρες σου'
'Remove not the old landmarks, which thy fathers placed.'
