Some opinions issued by the California Courts of Appeal are certified for publication by the Court of Appeal or ordered published by the Supreme Court because they meet criteria established in California Rules of Court, rule 8.1105. These opinions are known as "published" or citable opinions.

The majority of Court of Appeal opinions are not certified for publication and are thus not published in the Official Reports. These opinions are known as "unpublished"; they generally cannot be cited or relied upon in other cases (see California Rules of Court, rule 8.1115).

The Court may also dispose of cases in per curiam opinions, which do not identify the author. These cases frequently resolve cases summarily, often without oral argument. But per curiam opinions have sometimes been issued in argued cases.

In-chambers opinions are written by an individual Justice to dispose of an application by a party for interim relief, e.g., for a stay of the judgment of the court below, for vacation of a stay, or for a temporary injunction.

Opinions are posted on the website upon release in slip opinion format. Slip opinions remain posted until replaced with opinions edited to reflect the usual publication style of the United States Reports. Updated PDF versions of the opinions are posted on this website as the publication process proceeds, including preliminary prints and bound volumes of the United States Reports.

PLEASE NOTE: All opinions on this site are slip opinions. A slip opinion is not necessarily the court's final written decision. Slip opinions can be changed by subsequent court orders. Additionally, nonsubstantive edits (for style, grammar, citation, format, punctuation, etc.) are made before the opinions that have precedential value are published in the official reports of court decisions: the Washington Reports 2d and the Washington Appellate Reports. An opinion in the official reports replaces the slip opinion as the official opinion of the court. For this reason, some of the slip opinions on this website are no longer the court's official opinion. Each slip opinion that is no longer official is preceded with a cover sheet that explains its status and each is listed on this website with a red asterisk (*). For any slip opinion that is no longer official, you can find the current opinion in the official reports. Also, an electronic version (intended to mirror the language found in the official reports) of the official opinion can be found, free of charge, on the Washington State Judicial Opinions Website. For more information about the free website, see the Overview of the Free-Access Website for Washington State Appellate Court Opinions. For more information about precedential (published) opinions, nonprecedential (unpublished) opinions, slip opinions, and the official reports, see Background Information about Washington State's Appellate Court Opinions. Unpublished OpinionsUnder RCW 2.06.040, Court of Appeals unpublished opinions lack precedential value; under GR 14.1, they may not be cited as binding authority. The opinions collected here are those issued during October Term 2023 (October 2, 2023, through October 6, 2024). Opinions are posted on the website upon release in slip opinion format. An attorney general opinion is a written interpretation of existing law. Attorney general opinions cannot create new provisions in the law or correct unintended, undesirable effects of the law. Attorney general opinions do not necessarily reflect the attorney general's personal views, nor does the attorney general in any way "rule" on what the law should say. Furthermore, attorney general opinions cannot resolve factual disputes.

The Government Code lists the officials authorized to request formal attorney general opinions. The attorney general is prohibited by statute from giving a written opinion to anyone other than an authorized requestor.

The court is utilizing an automated process for posting opinions and memorandum dispositions to the website, which uploads them immediately as they are filed in each case rather than manually all at once at a designated time. Except for immediate filings that may happen at any time of day, opinions will generally continue to be filed and posted between 10:00am or 11:00am Pacific Time, and by no later than 1:00pm Pacific Time each day. The court will no longer be posting a notice that no opinions will be filed on a particular day. You can sign up here for an RSS feed that will alert you to the posting of opinions and dispositions as they are filed and posted. There is no charge to view or download these documents from our website. Please note that opinions and dispositions are also available from the PACER system shortly before they are posted to this site. PACER is a fee based system. Click here to open a PACER account and find out more about fees. PACER account holders may register as non-party users of the court's Appellate ECF system to obtain immediate email notification of the filing of opinions and dispositions in specific cases.
