Trees are living organisms that we depend on. They are like us in many ways, and help each other. Trees help other trees by supporting each other and giving nutrients to one another.
There are about 3.04 trillion trees in the world. In Massachusetts there are 1.6 billion trees. In the U.S.A there are over 865 different tree species.
Our purpose is to save trees from extinction. You can too!
Many Different Species of Trees Help Animals
Trees help animals in many ways! For example, the acorns and nuts that grow on some trees are food for small animals like squirrels and chipmunks. They provide shelter for a family of birds and other animals.
Since most animals rely on trees, they would most likely be extinct if there were fewer trees. For example, if the oak tree ever went extinct, the animals that get food from it would also start dying since the tree was its food source.
If trees weren’t around anymore, what would happen to most of the animals? The answer is: They probably wouldn’t survive. Trees are essential to living, because they provide food, shelter, different kinds of material, and space for animals. Animals would be lost without them.
Provide oxygen and improve our air quality
Give shade and shelter
Some trees provide food
Produce water
Help reduce flooding
Deforestation is a loss of trees, either due to natural or human causes.
Natural Deforestation
Natural deforestation is when trees die due to natural causes. Some examples are wildfires, droughts, natural climate change (change in ecosystem’s weather), and acid rain. These are only some examples of natural deforestation.
Human deforestation
Massachusetts has been losing roughly 5,000 acres of forests each year to development. Some causes of human deforestation are expanding agriculture, population growth, wildfires started by humans, and logging (the cutting down of trees). All in all, humans are a main cause of deforestation.
NEGATIVES
Tree cutting contributes to global warming
Impacts water quality
Influences climate change
Animals can go extinct around the world without trees
The place can become desert-like
POSITIVES
Lower air temperature, helping improve climate change
Act as air filters, improving air quality
Forests act as a buffer zone to protect humans from animal diseases
Help improve mental and physical health
Provide a habitat for many other species
We can help trees by:
Reusing paper
Planting trees
Don’t treat trees harshly
Don’t cut down trees unless you have to
Join programs that help trees
Hug a tree!
These are only a few ways you could help the trees!
There are many fun facts about trees!
Let’s take a look at some!
There is a tree species that has rainbow colored bark!
Can you believe that trees were around when the pyramids were built?
Trees “sleep” by lowering branches at night
Communicate through an underground “wood wide web”
Did you know that the rarest tree in the world is the Pennantia Baylisiana tree?
If you ever get lost in the woods, don’t worry! The trees will “help” you find your way home.
One of the most beautiful trees in the world is the Japanese Maple Tree!
The Dragon Blood Tree has sap with a very bright color red.
The Sandbox Tree fruit is poisonous, so never go near them.
Did you know that trees can block noise?
Most trees grow faster in the South because they will get more sun.
I bet that you didn’t know that trees have exploded from the cold before in Michigan!
Did you know that people have taken seeds to the moon to grow, and now they are “Moon Trees?”
In conclusion, trees are an important part of our ecosystem, and we need them to live. Trees do many things for us, let's do them a favor and…
Save
the
trees!
