The new licensing agreement, announced on Thursday, will see Opera mini become Nokia feature phones' browser of choice. It will also more than compensate for Opera's lost role as the default browser on Nokia's abandoned range of Android-based Nokia X phones, as at least before Nokia handed its devices business to Microsoft, it was still shipping a lot more feature phones than smartphones.

Web is at its best when browsing large complex web pages designed for higher resolution browsers. The overview and minimap features means you do get a sense of a 'full web' experience - something you do not get with Opera Mini. However the usability of Web is not as good as Opera Mini - it is the smaller things such as the start page and the quick scrolling that make a big difference.

Opera Mini was derived from the Opera web browser for personal computers, which has been publicly available since 1996.[13] Opera Mini was originally intended for use on mobile phones not capable of running a conventional Web browser.[14] It was introduced on 10 August 2005, as a pilot project in cooperation with the Norwegian television station TV 2,[15] and only available to TV 2 customers. The beta version was made available in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland on 20 October 2005.[16] After the final version was launched in Germany on 10 November 2005,[17] and quietly released to all countries through the Opera Mini website in December, the browser was officially launched worldwide on 24 January 2006.[18]On 3 May 2006, Opera Mini 2.0 was released. It included new features such as the ability to download files, new custom skins, more search engine options on the built-in search bar, a speed dial option, new search engines, and improved navigation.[19]On 1 November 2006, Opera Mini 3 beta introduced secure browsing, RSS feeds, photo uploading and content folding.[20] Content folding works by folding long lists such as navigation bars into a single line that can be expanded as needed. A second beta was released on 22 November,[21] and on 28 November, the final version of Opera Mini 3 was released.[22]

On 7 November 2007, Opera Mini 4 was released. According to Johan Schn, technical lead of Opera Mini development, the entire code had been rewritten.[23] Opera Mini 4 includes the ability to view web pages similarly to a desktop based browser by introducing Overview and Zoom functions, and a landscape view setting. In Overview mode, the user can scroll a zoomed-out version of certain web pages.[24] Using a built-in pointer, the user can zoom into a portion of the page to provide a clearer view; this is similar to the functionality of Opera's Nintendo-based web browsers. This version also includes the ability to synchronise with Opera on a personal computer.[25][26]Prior to Opera Mini 4, the browser was offered in two editions: Opera Mini Advanced for high-memory MIDP 2 phones, and Opera Mini Basic for low-memory MIDP 1 phones.[27] Opera Mini 4 replaced Opera Mini Advanced.[28] Originally, Google was the default search engine on Opera Mini.[29] On 8 January 2007, Opera Software and Yahoo! announced a partnership to make Yahoo! search the default instead.[30] On 27 February 2008, Opera Software announced that Google would henceforth be the default search engine for Opera Mini and Opera Mobile.A version for the Android operating system was announced on 10 April 2008. Rather than port the code to Android, a wrapper was created to translate Java ME API calls to Android API calls.[31]

Most Opera Mini versions use only the server-based compression method, with maximal compression but some issues with interactive web apps. Opera Mini can operate in three compression modes: "mini" (or "extreme" on Android versions), "turbo" (or "high" on Android versions) and uncompressed.[5][40] The turbo and mini modes reduce the amount of data transferred, thereby also increasing speed on slower connections.[5]

The Java ME and Windows Phone versions only have access to the mini compression mode.[5] Other versions can switch between various modes, gaining functionality at the cost of lower or no compression.[44] Opera Software claims that Opera Mini reduced the amount of data transmitted up to 90% in the mini (extreme) mode; in turbo (high) mode, it reduced amount up to 60%, similar to Google Chrome's Reduced Data mode.[40][45][46]

Opera Mini relies on data centers processing the Web page before sending it back to the phone in a compressed binary form. Opera Software operates data centers in the United States, Norway, China, Korea, Poland and Iceland.[68][69]

It's better to have exact code according to browser and version + editor although you need more if-tags. Or one possible solution could be that administrator could set these rules for can_use_html_editor without touching moodlelib.php (from settings?) because default editors may change, versions may change and some day we may wake up and notice that htmlarea has started working with Safari and Opera ...

In general, our approach is to divide testing into two stages: beta and production. In both cases the list of devices and browsers is minimal and not intended to be exhaustive. In order to be nimble, we are covering the main points and hoping our users and community of developers help us with identifying, and even fixing, bugs.

The beta changes frequently so testing here should be minimal as too much testing will be wasteful. Any changes to the beta should be sandboxed from the non-beta - e.g. add a new javascript or css file that is only added to beta.

Adele: (shows launched/pipeline/target/deep dive map)

Lila: average time to close a deal?

Carolynne, Yana: several months; longest ones can take up to a year

Adele: on our side, we can launch a new partner in 4 weeks if the partners are responsive.

Carolynne: we try to reply immediately, to be responsive, but it's not worth chasing down every operator

(Adele:)

in India and Brasil, general Internet penetration is high, but low WP penetration: respectively 20% and 12%

Lila: how do we measure that? (...relation to subscriber numbers)

really need to shift to uniques

Carolynne: glass is half full - I see some traction and lots of room for growth

Lila: indeed, without a lot of investment...

(Adele:)

Expected launches in Q1 (slide)

(Carolynne:)

Challenges:

HTTPS support:

for editing, privacy, app support

in early phases, were whitelisting by URL

these are obscured in HTTPS, so need to whitelist via IP instead

going back to existing partners to have them change that over too

Lila: can we tunnel HTTP via HTTPS for editing?

Dan: for Opera, also lack JS support

Carolynne: it's a priority for us, also with respect to upcoming switch of search engine traffic to HTTPS

Erik: (explains) some WP0 traffic comes from HTTPS

Lila: yes, need graceful failover

Erik: so all partners who don't support HTTPS yet are URL whitelists? yes

so we could redirect users only for those operators from non-free HTTPS to free HTTP

Mark: search redirection is goal for Q3

Wireless operators are keen on raising revenue from Internet browsing and the social networking boom as revenue from traditional voice calls is declining, but they are facing increasingly congested networks.

Data traffic on mobile operators' networks rose on average 4.7 times last year, with some operators seeing traffic surge more than 10 times, boosted by the uptake of wireless data cards in laptops, according to telecoms equipment firm Nokia Siemens.

Opera has 35.6 million users of its Opera Mini browser who all access the Internet through Opera's servers -- giving the firm usage data -- and who generated 227 million megabytes of data traffic for operators worldwide last month.

Important because: it is a venture that tries to prove the feasibility of carrier billing directly from content providers through the Web and one that by - passes the need for a platform - provided content store. This is valuable to network operators and content providers because it removes the requirements to be approved by a 3rd - party (the content store owner) while keeping the benefit of seamless payments. 0852c4b9a8
