The Open for All Workshop is a process-based workshop focusing on how to evaluate a course for inclusivity along different dimensions (diversity of representation, accessibility, inclusion, and student voice and choice), and how Open Pedagogy and OER can be leveraged to increase inclusivity. As a final workshop project, participants will conduct a review of an SPS course that they have developed or taught and present a proposal for increasing inclusivity in the course using specific DEIA and open practices.
The workshop format will be hybrid online, combining synchronous meetings with asynchronous learning activities completed within the Brightspace LMS workshop site.
The workshop site includes resources on inclusive pedagogies, a content area devoted to OER and Open Pedagogy, and a discussion forum for faculty to support each other in learning about these topics and developing a plan for implementing new practices in their teaching.
SPS faculty participating in this workshop will use a version of the CUNY SPS course review rubric annotated with DEIA educational practices to guide them in an iterative review of one of their courses through the lenses of the diversity of representation (Module I), inclusion, and accessibility (Module II), and student voice and choice (Module III). In each module, participants will share their reviews and thoughts on DEIA and open practices in the discussion forum. For the workshop project, participants will collect their three reviews into one presentation, along with a proposal to adopt DEIA and open practices as a response to their reflection on inclusivity in their course and share their review and proposal with workshop colleagues in a presentation on Friday, March 28.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Become aware of DEIA practices as they apply to online course design and teaching
Explore the relationship of OER, Open Pedagogy, and DEIA practices
WORKSHOP OUTCOMES
Review a course through the lens of DEIA practices, specifically through the framework of a course review rubric
Create a proposal for implementing OER or Open Pedagogy to increase the inclusivity of a course
WORKSHOP ORGANIZATION
In addition to administrative eligibility (workload, supervisor permission), to be eligible for the workshop stipend participants must fully participate in each module, including Friday meetings, the course review discussion forums, the workshop project, and the workshop reflection, and they must earn a final grade of at least 85%.
In designing and building this workshop, we have striven to reduce barriers to full engagement for all workshop participants. If you find that there is any aspect of the workshop that is preventing you from engaging with content or with colleagues as fully as you would like to, please reach out to us so that we can find a solution with you and improve accessibility for future workshop participants.
In each module, participants will use a version of the SPS Course Review Rubric annotated with DEIA practices to review their course. The results of this review will be shared in a discussion forum and then serve as the basis of the Workshop Project.
Presentations Friday, March 28.
Participants will present the results of their Course Reviews and a proposal to introduce one DEIA practice for each theme: Representation, Inclusion & Accessibility, and Student Voice & Choice.
Participants should submit presentations to Brightspace by the end of the day.
Detailed instructions, criteria, and the rubric for this assignment can be found in the Workshop Project module.
An element of all of our workshops, this is a student-centered, open-pedagogy practice that highlights student agency in the learning experience.
This workshop will use “No-Points” rubrics in Brightspace to demonstrate a way of providing feedback in the LMS without the pressure of a points-based rubric. Instead, verbal feedback will be provided on the rubric for discussions and the workshop project and the grade will be marked “complete” or “incomplete”. Feedback can be viewed by clicking on the View Rubric link beneath each activity in the Gradebook.
The main due dates in this workshop are for the Course Review discussion forums and the Workshop Project. These due dates are designed to encourage some preparation for our live online meetings so that our discussion can be enriched by your experience thinking about DEIA and open practices to your course.
We encourage you to aim to meet this schedule as a way of maintaining momentum toward completing the workshop within the workshop timeframe. Completing the workshop within the timeframe also allows us to complete administrative tasks (reporting, and requesting payment) in a timely fashion for all participants.
That said, we understand that participants have myriad professional responsibilities and that sometimes other events can require us all to prioritize our tasks to meet the most urgent obligations first. If you find any of the due dates in the workshop challenging, we encourage you to communicate with us so that we can come to a solution that works for everyone.
