At the end of the discussion, the learner is expected to:
Identify recurring patterns and motifs present in a short story, such as symbols, themes, character traits, narrative structures, or literary devices.
Demonstrate the ability to identify and interpret patterns and motifs through visual aids such as concept maps, storyboards, or graphic organizers.
Cultivate empathy and understanding towards characters' experiences and journeys as illuminated by the repetition and variation of key patterns and motifs throughout the narrative.
WHAT IS PATTERN?
Can you imagine a narrative without patterns? A novel where each scene, chapter, or other division is more or less independent from the rest? Well, I wish I could say “me neither”, but I’m afraid I’ve seen such awful novels. Which is precisely why I know they should be avoided at all costs. To create patterns in literature is to create cohesion and symbolic depth, all while favoring non-linear narratives.
In literature are creative repetitions that produce meaning precisely as a result of their repetition. We’ll examine this in more detail, with examples, but the key takeaway is this: Patterns in literature are about adding effective impact to your narrative
WHAT IS MOTIF?
A motif is a symbolic image or idea that appears frequently in a story. Motifs can be symbols, sounds, actions, ideas, or words. Motifs strengthen a story by adding images and ideas to the theme present throughout the narrative.
Motifs provide compositions with a traceable pattern: if a red dress or the idea of guilt or even a song continues appearing throughout a narrative, chances are, it means something. Motifs allow authors, writers, and directors to create a more poetic and structured narrative, cluing in readers and audiences to symbols of larger ideas. Motifs are partners to themes, as repetitive images and symbols emphasize the overarching themes of the work.
