Dates Set For FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023

With the success of the FIBA Competition System implemented in 2017, six windows of Qualifiers have been established across the four regions of Africa, Americas, Asia and Europe, which will see teams qualify for FIBA's flagship event that is to be held in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.

The first window of qualification will run from February 2020 to November 2021 with the remaining three windows in 2020 and 2023. This will result in 80 public teams competing for a place in the 2023 World Cup.

All the qualified teams will know their groups and who they will play against at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Draw on Saturday, April 29, in Manila, one of the competition's host cities. A broader programme of activities will be hosted throughout the weekend, including visits to the two Group Phase venues in Manila, Mall of Asia Arena and Araneta Coliseum, as well as team hotels and practice facilities.

Aside from the 32-qualified teams, there are 11 vacant slots. These include three European teams, five Americas teams, three African sides and one Asian squad.

The only eligible Americas team to have secured their ticket is Canada who are unbeaten through seven games and stand a chance of making history as the first team from the region to secure their place at the 2023 World Cup. Other contenders in the hunt include Cape Verde and South Sudan who will make their World Cup debuts should they prevail in their final three qualifiers.
