OneeChanbara ORIGIN or Onee Chanbara ORIGIN (ORIGIN, OnChanbara ORIGIN) is the latest entry in the OneeChanbara franchise, developed by Tamsoft and published by D3 Publisher. The game was originally released in Japan for the PlayStation 4 on December 5, 2019 and later in other Asian territories on September 24, 2020 and in North America and Europe on October 14, 2020. OneeChanbara ORIGIN is a remake and a retelling of THE OneeChanbara and THE OneeChanbara 2, the first two games in the OneeChanbara series. In order to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the long-running series, the visuals of the first two games have been brought into full HD and rendered in a beautiful new anime art style, courtesy of renowned character artist Katsumi Enami. The storytelling of the first two games has been optimized for a more cohesive and compelling tale about two estranged sisters locked in a deadly struggle. All will be revealed in this reinterpretation of the "origin story" that started it all.

OneChanbara (), initially defined The OneeChanbara (THE ), is a series of action-adventure hack and slash video games originally developed by Tamsoft for D3 Publisher's Simple 2000 series. The title is a portmanteau of the Japanese words onee-chan (, lit. "big sister", but also a colloquialism for a young adult woman) and chanbara (, "sword fighting"). The series centers around Aya, a cowgirl who wears a scarf and wields a katana, who is pitted against hordes of zombies and other monsters.

Realistic action-horror themes take a backseat in Onee Chanbara Origin, with campy over-the-top JRPG hacking and slashing taking its place. The game knows exactly what it's trying to be and never feels like it's compromising. I never played the original games in the series, but Onee Chanbara Origin sunk its teeth into me and made me very interested in doing so now. At the very least, the game has inspired me to find out how I can watch the film adaptation that came to fruition in 2008. Not too many games can boast having that kind of impact on me.

Onee Chanbara Origin is, as the name suggests, an origin story that retells the events of the first couple of games in the series. Aya and Saki are sisters who are part of the Baneful Bloodline, which hunts zombies and transforms when its members get too much blood on them. The game starts with Aya, a woman who wears a cowboy hat and underwear while fighting hordes of undead, searching for Saki, who has been brainwashed by the tropey anime villain who killed their mother.

Developed by Tamsoft, Onee Chanbara Origin takes the stories of the first two Onechanbara games and combines them into a brand new package. Both games have been fully remade, with updated graphics, animations, and voiceovers. The story follows the same beat as the originals, with sisters Aya and Saki having to navigate through a dystopian future Japan. After spending the majority of their lives apart, we find these two sisters on completely different paths.

Out of all of the games I have reviewed this year, at first glance I would have said that Onee Chanbara Origin would be the absolute worst. I do not have fond memories of the original games considering that they were mostly broken messes that were a chore to play through. Upon deciding to review this game my colleagues said things like, "Haha good luck" or "You poor soul". Once I actually hopped into the ridiculous world of Onee Chanbara Origin I was pleasantly surprised. The game is nowhere close to being perfect, but it is still an incredibly fun hack-and-slash experience.

All of these combat mechanics were present in the original games, but here they are much smoother and work together better. There also seems to have been a massive improvement to both the camera and lock-on mechanics which makes it easier to keep track of stronger enemies on the screen. The camera in particular I remember being an issue in older Onee Chanbara games, but here it mostly works for the player rather than against them.
