Initial rumours of a sequel to This Is Us surfaced in April 2014 as Horan, Malik, and Tomlinson were seen being followed by a camera crew during their visit to the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; meanwhile Payne and Styles were also followed by a camera crew during their visit to Machu Picchu in the Cusco Region of Peru.[4] On 20 May 2014, the band announced the concert film on their official website with filming taking place by the end of June 2014 during their Where We Are Tour in San Siro Stadium in Milan, to be released on home media in December 2014.[5]

At one point in the film, a scientist is introduced to explain the chemical reaction that takes place when fans engage with One Direction. Comparing the effect of listening to the music and engaging in frantic fan activities to the process of participating in sports events that produce dopamine, the scientist states that the girls are not crazy, just experiencing high levels of excitement. Much of this excitement seems to come from the full-bodied sensory overload that takes place in fan events, either at the concerts or when waiting in mass groups to see the group members on the street. It is this sensory overload that the 3D elements of the film heighten further and, for fans far away in a cinema auditorium, allows them to feel the One Direction experience just a little more closely.

In the span of five years, the group put out five albums, headlined four tours and even released two concert films. They were music-making machines, but arguably a lot of their success was fueled by their fiercely loyal fans, known as Directioners. They would swarm concerts in the thousands and would push to get albums and songs to Number One. Directioners considered themselves family and consistently displayed their adoration with massive fan projects like the one featured in this clip. For a group that was churning out one album after another and touring in-between releases, you could tell that this was a moment where the band felt like all their hard work was all worth it.

Shooting the concerts was full of logistical nightmares, such as a scene in which the band members are carried out over the crowd to a small stage in the middle of the arena. That would have been a tough sequence to film under normal circumstances, but the movie was being shot with heavy 3-D cameras.

Currently, the record for the highest-grossing concert movie of all time belongs to Michael Jackson's This Is It. Released in the wake of his untimely passing, the concert film and documentary provided an intimate look at the legendary artist's preparations for a tour that was set to be his final trek. By the time it concluded its theatrical run, This Is It had amassed an astounding $261 million at the box office.

This ranking changes when comedy performances are taken into account. Films featuring comedians such as Eddie Murphy, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Bernie Mac, along with the legendary Richard Pryor, have also proven to be box office hits. While these films aren't traditional concerts, they are categorized as performance films and sometimes included in rankings alongside musical concert films.

Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker who has explored the issues of consumerism, terrorism, fanboys and manscaping in some of his past work, recently stood among a crowd of thousands of screaming girls at the worldwide premiere in London for his next project, concert film One Direction: This Is Us.

In addition to being the director of such dramatic films as Raging Bull, Goodfellas and The Aviator, Scorsese is an avid chronicler of the history of American popular music. Most recently, he executive-produced the music miniseries The Blues, which aired on PBS, as well as the related concert film Lightning in a Bottle, directed by Antoine Fuqua. Scorsese also directed the documentary The Last Waltz (1978), which captured the legendary farewell concert of The Band, and he served as an assistant director and editor on Woodstock (1970).

One Direction has sold more than 5 million copies of its three albums in the U.S. and had a theatrical release of a 3-D concert film called This Is Us in 2013. The group has sold 3.5 million tickets for its current 69-date stadium tour, which begins a U.S. run Aug. 4 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The setlist of the One Direction concert film sees them perform songs from their third album Midnight Memories as well as their greatest hits from their first two albums Up All Night and Take Me Home.

Madonna got in even deeper, unveiling the drama backstage during her 1990 Blond Ambition world tour in cinma vrit-style black and white scenes interlaced with concert footage for this film that was tailed by at least one lawsuit.

Despite making the Top 10 list of highest grossing concert films, this doc from the creators and stars of the Fox TV show Glee performed well below expectations during its opening weekend. But it gave fans one last chance to see Cory Monteith and Mark Salling on screen before their deaths in 2013 and 2018 (respectively).

This isn't the first time musicians have released a concert film. The earliest known concert film was 1948's "Concert Magic," which featured violinist Yehudi Menuhin at the Charlie Chaplin Studios in 1947.

Filmed in 1972, the concert film was not released until 46 years later due to difficulty in synchronizing audio with visuals. After attempts to release it over the years, and Aretha Franklin's death, the Queen of Soul's family allowed the film to show in theaters.

The risqu concert film follows pop icon Madonna on her 1990 "Blond Ambition Tour." It is filmed in black and white to provide an intimate look at her behind the scenes, and then bursts into color during her performances.

The documentary shows the King of Pop during rehearsal and preparation for the "This Is It" concert scheduled to start 18 days before his death. While his family said they don't support the film, it made $261 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing documentary/concert film of all time worldwide.

An epic global stadium tour, a 3-D concert film that grossed close to $70M in ticket sales worldwide, and the November 2013 release of their third studio album, Midnight Memories, the young boys of One Direction have proved that they're more than just a flash in the Brit-pop pan.

One Direction burst onto the scene in 2011 after having formed before the world's eyes on the British singing competition The X-Factor. English lads Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson and Irish chap Niall Horan each signed up for the show as a solo act but were ultimately convinced that they'd be much more successful as a group.

The boys clicked immediately and have been tearing up the charts ever since. 1D made history when their first studio album, Up All Night, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., and their follow up, Take Me Home, topped the charts in over 30 countries. The band is known for their bright and catchy dance-pop sound, their boundless energy on stage, and their clean and preppy fashion style

Especially for those who weren't able to experience the glory of a live performance concert experience, the concert film has acted as a great way for audiences across the world to enjoy these performances. Whether they are musical concert movies designed to give audiences the feeling of being at a live concert, or stand-up performance movies designed to have audiences experience a stand-up routine with a crowd of their own, concert movies have fulfilled a powerful void throughout film history.

BTS Permission to Dance on Stage Soul - Live Viewing was a special concert experience featuring a number of songs and musical performances from the world-famous K-pop band BTS. This concert film was specifically used as a way for them to connect with their fans across the world during the COVID-19 Pandemic before the concert films would eventually be brought onto Disney+.

It's hard to deny how much of a major impact both K-pop and BTS especially have had over the music industry in recent years, helping lead to the major success of this concert film. Even more than simply doing well in the United States, this concert film's availability and popularity worldwide acted as a major reason why it attained a high box office.

Katy Perry: Part of Me is a concert film that takes a look at the long and expansive life, career, and various music of pop sensation Katy Perry as it follows her California Dreams World Tour. On top of simply her life concert performance, the film also provides a number of behind-the-scenes interviews, and all-access footage of rehearsals, choreography, and all sorts of Katy Perry style.

Part of Me is an effective combination of both a concert film and a music documentary, as it follows the trend of concert films of the early 2010s in being a complete cinematic must-see experience for fans. Especially when considering the massive star power that Katy Perry held in 2012, it's no surprise that her concert film would find similar levels of box office success.

Pryor has surmounted a powerful legacy as one of the most well-regarded and greatest stand-up comedians of all time, and its thanks in part to the amazing concert film Live on the Sunset Strip that he has attained such a powerful legacy.
