This Is Us was first announced by the band while on The Today Show in New York's Rockefeller Plaza on 12 November 2012,[8] followed by confirmation it would be directed by Morgan Spurlock.[9] Spurlock, who unsuccessfully negotiated to direct similar films, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Katy Perry: Part of Me, said that he took on the film because of the band's fast-track rise to stardom.[10] The film started filming in Tokyo on 17 January 2013 and was being shot in 3D with 4K resolution RED Epic digital cameras, which Spurlock said gave a cinematic appeal. The film was later given the name One Direction: This Is Us on 19 March 2013, previously being referred to as 1D3D.[11]A majority of the movie was shot in London at the O2 arena in early April. It has been further said that the film is not scripted, with the footage genuine and of them acting "naturally".[12] Harry Styles admitted that the cameras following them around was scary but said that this film gives them the opportunity to show more personality, how they interact, and how they relax when not on stage.[13] Niall Horan remarked that the film crew had access to all areas, even filming them in the toilet.[14]

Parents need to know that One Direction: This Is Us follows the international concert tour of Britain's most popular boy band since the Beatles. The documentary, directed by Academy Award nominee Morgan Spurlock, chronicles how Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry, and Louis went from being a bunch of humble British/Irish boys who could sing to becoming a near-overnight sensation -- first in the United Kingdom and then the world. There's some mild language (including a couple of uses of "ass"), several glimpses of the One Direction guys shirtless (including camera shots of their tattoos), and some romantic song lyrics. Fans -- particularly tween/teen girls -- will want to see this on the big screen. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails.

Spurlock has said he intended for "This Is Us" to be his version of the groundbreaking Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night." But while we see the members of One Direction running from mad throngs in the streets and enjoying wacky antics backstage between the high-energy 3-D concert performances, we never get a sense of them as real people with recognizable, human emotions beyond joy or gratitude. At one point, Liam laments that he wonders whether anyone will ever love him for him. Harry comes to closest to saying anything remotely negative when he acknowledges that he doesn't always love this life. And while they're all clearly talented, confident singers, we get no sense that any of them has a deep passion or drive to make music.

"I don't remember a lot of the reviews. I do remember the premieres: Standing at Leicester Square with wall-to-wall fans, packed for the premiere," Milano said. "I remember sitting there, thinking, 'I will never experience this again.'"

At one point in the film, a scientist is introduced to explain the chemical reaction that takes place when fans engage with One Direction. Comparing the effect of listening to the music and engaging in frantic fan activities to the process of participating in sports events that produce dopamine, the scientist states that the girls are not crazy, just experiencing high levels of excitement. Much of this excitement seems to come from the full-bodied sensory overload that takes place in fan events, either at the concerts or when waiting in mass groups to see the group members on the street. It is this sensory overload that the 3D elements of the film heighten further and, for fans far away in a cinema auditorium, allows them to feel the One Direction experience just a little more closely.

martin scorsese creatively was in a bad place during late 2012, but was lucky enough to appear in this landmark of documentary filmmaking in 2013, some rumours say it later inspired him to make the award sweeping wolf of wall street. one direction really connect with everyone

one of the most ridiculous things to happen around the production of this movie was when the girl who got pranked by niall in the movie bragged about it on 1d stan twitter before release and gained like 10k followers but when the movie came out we all heard her say that her favorite song was what makes you beautiful (the most basic song) so she tweeted a 7 tweet long apology saying she was panicked & didnt know what else to say and then the whole fandom clowned her for having bushy eyebrows

It's a busy week with eight or so first-run releases. (It depends on if you count the The Sound of Music Live! as a first-run release.) However, none of them were big hits at the box office. Some of them made enough money to break even sometime on the home market, others struggled more than that, but none were breakout hits. Some of these are still worth picking up. For others, there's a reason they struggled. There are also a few TV on DVD releases this week that are worth picking up, as well as a few limited releases that are strong. All in all, it's a good week on the home market with many DVD and Blu-rays that are worth picking up, some of which I'm looking forward to reviewing... when they show up. This time of year, getting screeners on time tends to be a little harder. I think Burn Notice: Season Seven is the top selection, but I'll have to wait for the screener to make sure. On a side note, next Tuesday is Christmas eve, so there won't be a DVD and Blu-ray Release report. There's only four films worth talking about anyway, so I'm including them on this list. Of next week's films, More Than Honey on DVD or Blu-ray is the Pick of Next Week. More...International Box Office: Elysium On Top, But White House Moves UpSeptember 13th, 2013

Elysium remained in first place with $21.31 million on 10,731 screens in 52 markets for totals of $127.46 million internationally and $212.57 million worldwide. Of that, $11.75 million came from 6,253 screens in China, which was enough for first place there. Not this weekend, but next weekend, the film opens in Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and other markets, so it should be a player on the international market for a few weeks, but it will need help on the home market to break even. The weekend after the Labor Day long weekend is historically the worst weekend of the year. Because of that, it should come as no surprise that there is only one wide release this weekend. After all, studios don't want to release a film if the weekend is practically cursed. However, that one film is Riddick, which is actually earning good buzz. It might crack $30 million over the weekend. Might. It would be a surprise, but you can't completely dismiss the possibility. The only other semi-new film to talk about is Instructions Not Included, which is doubling its theater count. However, it's a niche market film and these tend to have short legs, as the target audience rushes out to see them immediately. Fortunately, it doesn't really matter, because last year was a disaster. As long as Riddick tops $10 million, 2013 will come out ahead. The Labor Day long weekend is over and pre-weekend predictions were spot on, at least when it came to the top-two films. One Direction: This is Us opened in first place on Friday, but by Sunday had fallen to fifth place, allowing Lee Daniels' The Butler to remain on top, if you go by the four-day weekend. There were a few surprises this weekend, including Instructions Not Included. I hoped it would do well, but I never imaged it would do this well. Overall the weekend was strong at $125 million over the three-day weekend, which was 14% more than last weekend. Over four days, the total box office was $160 million. This was 21% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2013 holds a 0.9% lead over 2012 at 7.44 billion to $7.37 billion.More...Weekend Estimates: One Direction Rounds Out Hollywood's Biggest SummerSeptember 1st, 2013

Hollywood's Summer ends this weekend with a suitably back-to-school winner in the form of One Direction: This is Us. The 3D concert movie will pick up $17 million Friday-Sunday, largely on the back of an impressive $8.9 million gross on Saturday. While that won't set it up to challenge Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus among the top grossers in this particular sub-genre, it does show the solid business model for 3D films that cater to pop fans. Performances among other films playing this weekend were more varied.More...Weekend Predictions: Laborious TaskAugust 29th, 2013

It's the Labor Day long weekend, which is widely regarded as the weakest long weekend of the year. This year there are two wide releases, One Direction: This is Us and Getaway, looking to grab the final box office dollars before Summer officially ends. (One could argue it unofficially ended weeks ago.) One Direction should have no trouble finding an audience among young girls, but there's a chance the more mature audience Lee Daniels' The Butler has been attracting will be large enough to withstand that push. Getaway, on the other hand, is just hoping to get one positive review before the weekend starts. There was a third film that was supposed to open wide this week, Closed Circuit, but it is now opening in 800 or so theaters, so it won't be a factor. Last year, there were two wide releases, both of which topped $10 million during the three-day weekend. The new releases this year won't match that, but there's better depth this time around.
