Additionally, if you have an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), you can play audio on your HomePod speakers from devices such as DVD players or game consoles that are connected to an eARC-supported TV with an HDMI cable. See Set up Apple TV.

If your Apple TV is connected to a home theater receiver or TV using an HDMI cable, you may experience audio latency, a delay that sounds like an echo when playing audio on both receiver speakers and a wireless speaker.

How To Connect A TV Or Audio Receiver To Apples HomePod

The Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable was designed to allow AirPods Max to connect to analog sources for listening to movies and music. AirPods Max can be connected to devices playing Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless recordings with exceptional audio quality. However, given the analog-to-digital conversion in the cable, the playback will not be completely lossless.

If I play a source connected directly to the TV (antenna, one of its smart apps, or a device connected to one of its other HDMI ports), then the TV sends audio to the receiver over the HDMI cable using ARC, so the sound comes from the receiver and it speakers

I assume that, if the Apple TV supports ARC, that it can receive audio data (e.g. from your TV) and retransmit it to appropriately connected speakers (like HomePods). You would connect the Apple TV to an ARC-enabled HDMI port on your TV. Then connect other devices (e.g. cable receiver, Blu-Ray player) to other ports on the TV, which will forward their audio to the AppleTV via ARC, and it will in-turn send that audio to your HomePods.

Additionally, the TV has three more HDMI inputs, one analog A/V input (stereo audio and either composite or component video) and an antenna for over-the-air reception. (Like most TVs sold today with tuners, it includes a minimal analog tuner that can receive channels 3 and 4, allowing connectivity to devices like VCRs and really old game consoles.) For a few months, my daughter had her XBox connected to the TV via one of its inputs.

To that, he connected an adapter to go from the dual composite audio connectors to a stereo mini-jack. Then he added the Apple adapter to go from stereo mini-jack to Lightning. It really is a beauty to behold, and so elegant.

We obviously wanted the best audio possible so we wanted to use the digital optical option. For the grand price of $2.63 from Monoprice, I was able to buy their 6-foot S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio Cable to connect from the Belkin to one of the two digital optical in connectors on the back of our stereo receiver.

I tapped it, and it offered to add the receiver to my specific home. It then started to connect to my network, and in about a half-second my Eero gave me a notification that a new AMPAK Technologies device had joined my network.

Incidentally, if you want to connect your HomePod to your Apple TV, this is possible as a (limited) control and as an external audio device. The latter is self explanatory, so let's look at the former use case as detailed in this article.

Use my old Airport Express. I understand a recent update brought AirPlay 2 support. Can I start music on the HomePod, and pipe that through to my ceiling speakers if I connect the Airport Express audio out port to my receiver? Will that be as seamless as the Sonos setup I have now?

Use an Apple TV. I also have an Apple TV connected to my receiver. Can that be an AirPlay 2 receiver, and work seamlessly in tandem with the HomePod, so I could send music through the ceiling speakers (via the receiver) that way?

Since the HomePod is an AirPlay 2 device, you can also incorporate it into a Wi-Fi-based multiroom audio system, along with the HomePod Mini, Apple TV, and any third-party AirPlay-2-enabled speakers. AirPlay 2 is also included in a lot of AV receivers and TVs. You can launch playback via Siri voice control, move audio around the house, and group speakers together. In our guide to multiroom wireless speaker systems, we like AirPlay 2, but only for people who are heavily invested in Apple devices.

AirPlay 2 takes things one step further by adding the ability to share music (or video) with multiple connected devices, as long as the Apple device is running iOS11 or higher. Compatible devices include the HomePod, iPad, iPhone and Mac computers. Audio streaming can be done through any AirPlay-compatible speaker, stereo receiver or AV receiver. Video streaming is limited to Apple TV devices.

If you own an AV receiver, and you plug in your Blu-ray players, game consoles, or streaming device into it, the receiver will play the audio portion through your home theater speakers and send the video portion along to your TV. So far, so good.

Wires are so old school, especially when it comes to headphones. Unless you're an audiophile who must have the peak possible hi-res sound quality that, with a few exceptions, can only be achieved with a set of wired headphones, then getting yourself a pair of the best wireless headphones is an absolute must. Don't misunderstand us: wireless headphones sound fantastic, and they're packed with features such as active noise cancellation (ANC), transparency modes for hearing the outside world the way you want to, excellent call quality, Bluetooth multipoint connectivity and more.

There are two ways to AirPlay Audio on an iOS/iPad OS device. If your app supports AirPlay, on the Now Playing screen, you may see a triangle with a radiating series of concentric rings. Selecting that icon will bring up a list of available AirPlay audio devices on your network, like a wireless speaker or an AirPlay-compatible AV receiver. Select the one you want.

If your app does not support direct AirPlay streaming, you can create an AirPlay connection to a compatible speaker using the Control Center. Look for a media control panel that has the same triangle with radiating concentric rings icon, and select it. That will bring up a list of available AirPlay audio devices on your network, like a wireless speaker or an AirPlay-compatible AV receiver. Select the one you want.

Could Apple follow suit, or develop its own protocol here? There is some indication that Apple has thought more about wireless streaming and its audio quality: in the 2023-released AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C case, Apple has included what it calls a "groundbreaking wireless audio protocol" that "unlocks powerful 20-bit/48kHz Lossless Audio". Sounds exciting, right? The rather gigantic caveat is that this only works when the Pro 2 USB-C model is connected to the upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset. So there's still no way to listen to your Apple Music playlists in hi-res... on your iPhone... yet. Let's hope that this new wireless protocol could indicate a new future of better-quality, lossless music playback on more Apple products we can all own and enjoy.

Alternatively, If you can connect your existing speakers to an existing AV receiver then you might be able to find an AirPlay 2 adapter that plugs into your current AV receiver so you can access your speakers via your Mac, iPhone or iPad. I have no experience with these AirPlay 2 adapters, but Belkin offers the SoundForm Connect.

Hi Gary, I recommend contacting Belkin to determine if their Soundform solution is HomeKit compatible. That said, I did a quick search and found this blog article that from HomeKitNews.com and it seems to imply that the Soundform is HomeKit compatible: -soundform-connect-with-apple-airplay-2/

Bluetooth is a digital wireless signal and there is some latency expected due to the coding/decoding and compression/decompression steps that must occur. In addition to regular Bluetooth audio (SBC), the Connect also supports the aptX and aptX Low Latency audio codecs, which are notable for having lower latency (smaller audio delay) compared to regular Bluetooth audio. Using the Connect with a headphone that supports aptX or aptX Low Latency will minimize audio lag.

Some modern TVs and receivers also have an audio delay option in their settings menu, which should be set to 0 to minimize lag.

Dolby Atmos processing used to require a dedicated AV receiver, but did you know the Apple TV 4K is powerful enough to decode Dolby Atmos sound? If you have a HomePod wireless speaker or stereo pair, you can connect the Siri speaker to your Apple media streamer and enjoy an immersive audio experience in your home without buying expensive AV equipment.

Previously AirPlay was a one-to-one protocol, from your phone to a compatible speaker, AV receiver or other piece of gear. While this made it comparable to Bluetooth audio streaming, AirPlay also generally sounded better, thanks to the wider bandwidth that Wi-Fi provides.

In the vast majority of cases you'll need to connect your TV to an AV receiver unless your speakers are wireless, and that connection is usually done via an optical cable or more commonly, an HDMI cable to the ARC (Audio Return Channel) or eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel). ARC/eARC means that everything on your TV is passed to your speakers, including streaming TV apps, games on your console, and content from set-top boxes or streaming sticks.

An additional benefit to going down the AV receiver route is that you can add more speakers later to make your audio even better. We did that with our setup: what started as a simple but great-sounding stereo system is now a less simple but even greater-sounding system with a subwoofer, two rear surround speakers and two upwards-firing Dolby Atmos speakers.

A friend has a Fosi audio DAC/amp that does bluetooth, and connected to a pair of HS5 Yamahas. Also has another pair off a reference amp for his music room. He jokes that the speakers are too good for bluetooth (he can hear the compression on some tracks, I cannot)

This is an asyncio python library for interacting with Apple TV and AirPlay devices. It mainlytargets Apple TVs (all generations), but also support audio streaming via AirPlay to receivers like the HomePod,AirPort Express and third-party speakers. It can act as remote control to the Music app/iTunes in macOS. be457b7860
