The performers were also on the youthful side, among them eight-year-old singer Xylophone who is from the community; 18-year-old Johanna McPherson (who recently earned seven CSEC subjects) and her 17-year-old brother, who got eight who will both do poetry; teenage reggae gospel artiste Dean Coore and Damali Adele Ife.

Next Thursday's stop is at Haile Selassie High School, with Keteis Oyude as the speaker, Exile Di Drave, Jah Bouks and Maveck the performers. Miller said Rastafari TV will also be launched and there will be a presentation of the school's motto in Amharic.

One Friday, September 19, the Conscious Reggae Party goes past its school hours with a full staging at the One Love Caf, Bob Marley Museum, 56 Hope Road, St Andrew. Among the performers will be I-Wayne, Jah Bouks, the Jah Over Evil family and Wayne J, with Iset Sankofa and Rasserella supplying recorded music.

Earlier this week, the Conscious Reggae Party School Tour made a stop at St George's College on North Street, Kingston. Warrior King, Isha Blender and Xylophone (who is a youth ambassador for the Conscious Reggae Party concert series) performed for the students and visitors from high schools such as St Jago.

It was a day when St George's footballer Dominic James, who died earlier in the month after collapsing at a Manning Cup match, was being celebrated. Denise 'Isis' Miller, who is central to arranging the party and school tour, said the intention was "... to give them strength and enjoyment through the music". Kingly T: I thought it was cold here. [laughs] I always have a problem when the winter comes around. It's really a struggle with the reggae music here. I've been trying with it for years. I know people here love reggae music. But the people who are in charge don't give reggae enough of a chance.

Kingly T: It's a mixture of lovers rock and conscious reggae. There's one song called "Cool Down" track that I'd put in the dancehall category. It's a refreshing album for listeners of who appreciate all styles of reggae music.

Whatever mood you're in, contemporary reggae has a tune for you. That's because Jamaican music is a study in contrasts: Songs veer from sacred to profane, sexy to spiritual, blisteringly aggressive to decidedly dulcet.

But it was when Etana moved back to Kingston some 10 years ago that she found her niche as a singer of reggae-soul. Born Ventrice Morgan, Queen Ifrica began her career in 1995 at a local talent contest in her hometown of Montego Bay. On her 2009 debut set, Montego Bay, she boldly crosses boundaries: A Rastafarian singer who doesn't shy away from sexier subjects, she's equally adept as a singer of roots music and a performer of dancehall-style chat. "Lioness on the Rise" fast became a feminist anthem in a male-dominated reggae scene.

The School of Rock San Mateo House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock San Mateo's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at CA rock venues throughout the year.
