The process is automatic, so it doesn't matter if you don't know how to do it yourself - Fotor does everything for you!

I need a square headshot for a website. The photo i want to use is a rectangle shaped image. when i try to crop on iPhoto or Aperture, it only lets me select a square within the existing image. I would like to expand the image width, even if the space created is blank, so i can play with the square cropping without being restricted to the original image.

First post here and setting up my printer today all is good except for one real "feature" of photo printing which is the top and bottom of prints having a border approx 1/4" on each end. Landscape has the the white borders on both left and right sides. The other two edges are fine on either print.

The results are the same a white border on top and bottom of the print. Using Photo Paper Plus Glossy ll and I have tried borderless, then borderless moving around in crop to center (in app), tried with borders.

I think there's maybe another way to do this. No rectangles and no manually drawing anything, so a fairly accurate way to create set sized frames around a picture.

1. Open your image and using the crop tool expand it to allow plenty of space for the borders/framing around your image. (pull the top left corner outwards followed by the bottom right corner outwards). Unlock the layer if it is locked.

2. Choose Select > Selection From Layer. This should put a selection around the outer edges of your image.

3. Choose Select > Outline. You will now get a dialogue showing a radius control and an alignment option. Choose 'Outside' in the alignment option and then use the radius control to choose the width of the inner frame that you want to create.

4. Choose Edit > Fill to fill the frame with a colour of your choice.

Why did I start thinking about using the golden ratio for print borders? Actually, I was about to print one of my pictures. Looking at the screen preview of the print, I was trying to figure out visually pleasing borders.

I want an uncropped 4x6 from Walgreens, so I want to put a 1" border on the image such that when I order a 5x7 print it will have a 1" border (of course, Walgreens will crop the border, but the remaining image will still be 4x6 even if the borders are cropped).

If you add 1/2 borders around the image to make the file 5x7, when you get your print back from Walgreens you will find that the embedded 4x6 image is now a little larger than 4x6 (Walgreens had to expand the entire file to print it "borderless" on 5x7 paper).

Then set the canvas size to the new, larger, value. Tell Elements to leave your image in the center. The current background color wI'll be used for the borders. Elements will create a border to fill in the space between your original 4x6 image and the new canvas size.

Brad, you don't have to "set" borders - you simply size your image in relationship to the paper size for the borders you want. Just takes a bit of math. Of course if you put a 4x6 image on a 5x7 paper, you must have 1/2" borders on each side, for the total of 1" difference between paper and image sizes.

The reason is that Walgreens printers are not perfect. If you try to print something exactly 5x7 on 5x7 paper, you will get white edges on two sides. Their solution is to enlarge the image. This prevents white borders from slight misalignment.

Lomography's LomoChrome '92 is designed to mimic the look of classic drugstore film that used to fill family photo albums. As we discovered, to shoot with it is to embrace the unexpected, from strange color shifts to odd textures and oversized grain.
