OILERY IS AN ENABLER FOR A PARTICIPATORY WAY OF PRODUCING COMMUNITY-DRIVEN EVENTS.
a communal club house that demonstrates in practice how community-driven event production works and invites everyone to co-create during December–January
encouraging inclusive content creation: both creating and experiencing content is made accessible also to new makers and audiences who do not yet belong to any community
a testbed for new business models: we will trial new ways to finance events
an incubator for what’s next: e.g., exploring the potential of the Suvilahti power plant area
an invitation to the surrounding neighborhoods: local event- and art-producing communities and residents are invited to get to know, experience, and participate.
Oilery enables, supports, and involves: we take on the financial responsibility for the use of the space (rent, basic insurance, etc.), while also committing users to act responsibly toward the property and other participants (e.g., for paid public events, arranging licensed security as well as event and any movable-property insurance).
Impact data: feedback and visitor information are collected in line with GDPR to demonstrate the model’s value to the urban culture, art, and events sectors.
Open-door policy and open calls: art and event production “slots” are applied for through open online forms. Doors are open on weekdays from 12:00 to 18:00, with later hours available by request.
Oilery as an economic collective: Oilery is not a profit-seeking company or association, but a collective in which any possible surplus (e.g.,space rent, commissions from art sales via exhibitions or from evening events with an entrance fee) is shared among Oilery members — the enablers. Oilery operates transparently: at the end of the pilot period, the final accounts, including costs and any revenue sharing, will be made public.

Located in Kallio, Helsinki, between Teollisuuskatu and Aleksis Kiven katu, the city-owned building designed by Albert Nyberg was completed in 1923 as a morgue. At times, the space was used as a paint warehouse for a long time, and from 1986 to 2019 it served as a youth center. Helsingin Kaupunkitilat Oy opened the Harju morgue, which had been empty for five years, for a new kind of trial use with the aim of finding out who is interested in the space and what kind of activities would be suitable there. The Harju elää! project started the trial period from August 2025 to March 2026. In September, the space hosted VILLD pop-up, and in October-November, the space will serve as a rehearsal and performance space for the Raekallio Corp. dance group, as well as a clay workshop.
