The Toronto Metropolitan University Thrill Design Invitational (TMUTDI) is a 4-day competition hosted by the Toronto Metropolitan University and Universal Creative in Orlando, Forida. The Invitational challenges teams to tackle a number of theme-park design related prompts and present their ideas for judging in front of an audience of industry professionals.
In November, 2022, I was selected to be one of seven team members to represent RIT TPE for this competition. We spent the first 4 days of our 7 day trip to Orlando working around the clock on competition prompts, 1 day at Universal Studios and Universal's Islands of Adventure, and the last 2 days at the International Association for Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo at the Orange County Convention Center. IAAPA is the world's largest gathering of companies and parks related to the themed entertainment industry. While at IAAPA, we had the opportunity to network with companies, parks, other like-minded students, and industry legends.
This was an amazing experience and an incredible glimpse into what life is like working for the themed entertainment industry.
Our mission is to bring together those with a passion for roller coasters and theme parks and foster excitement for this unique industry.
The TPE club meets weekly to discuss current events in the amusement industry. Many of the club's active members attend yearly events (IAAPA & ASTM F24) and competitions (Cornell Design Competition and Toronto Metropolitan University Thrill Design Invitational). Members also go on seasonal park trips.
No Limits 2 is the industry standard CAD program and simulation software for roller coaster concepts. In an effort to gain more experience in the industry I taught myself how to use the software. Below is a video of a roller coaster, Talon, that I created in the software as well as pictures of the editing interface.
Talon is an Intamin rocket coaster with elements inspired by Cedar Point's Maverick and Hersheypark's Fahrenheit.
A rendered view of talon ascending the lift hill. This ride uses Linear Synchronous Motors (LSM) instead of a traditional chain lift.
